I ended up buying "marine navigator" in the play store for $10.

I've used Marine Navigator as my smartphone backup for a couple years. Very nice little program. Great for use on the dinghy. Uses the NOAA raster charts right off the website, although you do need to allow some time to "import" them the first time you use them. After that, it's very quick to load.

I'm hoping that OpenCPN for Android will become my smartphone backup in the future, once it's into a stable release form.

Absent sufficient feedback from people having trouble installing linux and OpenCPN on their android device, there's not much I can do to help. One factor beyond 'our' control is a poor internet connection. So, if you're in a remote South Pacific location, what can I say?

You may need to ask yourself what more could you have done to tell me precisely where you were encountering problems?
