Re: Laptop recommendations for OpenCpn/sailboat?

What is a boat.xml? A polar diagram perhaps?

If it is a file that contains some data that the computer reads and interprets (like a polar data) at times it is wrong formatting AT SAVE.

So imagine the file is a polar diagram data and the software works fine till you edit the .xml. If so, I have seen the following problems this far:

a) wrong formatting at save (editor problem, change your xml editor),
b) wrong data formatting type (a comma in place of a dot, etc.),
c) wrong permissions at save, (in Windows right click, properties, permissions)
d) wrong file type at save (e.g. the editor falling back on its default file type).

etc.

It is very often something very silly that you can eliminate by trial and error. Try to find what kind of modification makes the crash. Make one small mod at a time only.

A very simple way to check quickly if it is a file / editor challenge is:

a) make externally (no editor used, simple copy/paste does this in Windows) a copy of the original file. Rename the source file to *_old.

b) rename the copy file to the original source file name,

c) open and edit this file, save. Then open AGAIN, re-edit back to original value, save. Now open this file in the program. The file is the same, except for editor manipulation.

In the above, if you get a crash. Change the editor.

It is very difficult to go wrong if you use the Notepad. Easier with the Wordpad or Word.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Laptop recommendations for OpenCpn/sailboat?

Boat.xml is boat parameters required by the weather routing plugin. Delete it or rename it and try again. The plugin can create a new one. Read the help file for the plugin. :-)

Panasonic Toughbook. They are also water resistant, shock resistant, and almost indestructible. Look for an "off lease" deal.

Re: Laptop recommendations for OpenCpn/sailboat?

Barnakiel, friend,
What is a boat.xml? A polar diagram perhaps?

It currently it is simply a list of the a given boat's polars for different sail sets and conditions. Sean has provided an Overlap calculation function on one of the tabs which calculates when to switch sail sets or polar files.

In earlier versions of Weather_routing the boat.xml file used to contain all the physical boat data so that a boat performance calc could be done to arrive at a useable polar file.
Sean has rewritten the weather_routing_pi to simplify it for users, although I think the performance calc was useful.
