Kindle Fire HD

I've just been given a Kindle Fire HD and am wondering what boating related use I could put it to.

There's no GPS chip, so no point in loading any navigation software apps.

No 3G or 4G capability, so not much use out of range of WiFi.

It does have WiFi and Bluetooth capability so I'm curious to know if anyone's manage to use one as a cockpit repeater for OpenCPN?

Re: Kindle Fire HD

You could PDF all of your manuals and keep them on there - less power consumption than a PC/laptop!

You can use your smartphone as a WiFi hotspot to get internet connectivity. I do that with my Nook HD.

I have used it as a cockpit repeater for my boat computer that is down below. Run VNC server on the boat computer and Moocha (I think that's the spelling) VNC viewer on the kindle. Have also used it to view OCPN running on Raspberry PI in headless mode.

Are you able to install Opencpn on this device ? If yes You can stream all th NMEA data over wifi from a raspberry with GPS connected to the raspberry and using KPLEX or openploter on the raspberry. - If so, you will have NMEA data for "all" your devices over wifi.
