Kap File repository?
Does anyone know of a way to have a repository for Kap Files?
Jon Hocking has 300gb available and I expect others have been building libraries.

Re: Kap File repository?
I've started putting a few on github, but think they like you to stay under 1Gb per repository and no files over 100Mb.
Traffic density from marinetraffic can be helpful to find some empty ocean on longer passages.
What source of kap files is popular? I really like having satellite images of anchorages.

Re: Kap File repository?
DropBox or similar might be a better fit than github.

I have a nearly full dropbox and unlimited google drive, but git seemed to be an easier way to share with others often non computer literate without having to set up public folders or add individual sharing.

Re: Kap File repository?
Interesting. I only know github from a software dev persective, seems odd it would be easier than DropBox or Drive for this use, but Ive never tried to use it for regular file storage.
I use DropBox to share files with friends who are just barely computer literate.
On my Android device, I can add cloud accounts and access them very much like a local file system using the same file manager.

Dropbox they could all go in a public folder but running out of space becomes an issue, and having your chart directory in dropbox. Public folder in drive would work, git seems an easier way to catalog whats where, anyway - they're there if anyone wants them
Wonder what the copyright is with navionics turned into raster.. probably a bit naughty uploading to a public place.

Re: Kap File repository?
Soggy paws have a large number of the s pacific map files avaliable on their website, along with an enormous amount of other info, may be worth having a chat with them on how they do it, or whether they would be willing to expand.

Re: Kap File repository?
I maintain a 'library' of KAP files as part of a collection of anchorages, routes, and items of interest for navigators. My focus is on SE Asia since I live in the Philippines. I call this 'Terry's Topics' and update about once a month.
I use the service of MediaFire to store in the cloud.
I have a distribution list of 163 that receive the updates as an attachment to an email. PM me with boat name and email address if you want to be added.
I also post each update to my website here.
Terry

Re: Kap File repository?
We've been in SE Asia since 2009, & the charts for Indonesia (especially) are horrid. I started making GE KAPs several years ago. I make them from only 2000m nominal elevation, as that gives me all the detail that GE offers, & we're often trying to find anchorages by water-color.
Since I don't know where we're likely to go, I've taken to charting the entire coastline of the countries we may visit. I've now got the Louisiades, Solomon, N PNG islands, Micronesia, Palau, Philippines (except far NE & SW), Indonesia, E Malaysia, W Thailand, Maldives, & Chagos. It's now over 312,000 high resolution KAPs, totaling ~300GB.

He is looking for a good online repository.

Re: Kap File repository?
How big would the repository need to be?
