KAP Charts - Indonesia/PNG, Raja Ampat, Birds head Area
Hi
Does anyone know of any KAP charts floating around for the Eastern Indonesia and PNG region including Raja Ampat and Birds Head Seascape region?
Thanks
Amanda

That website is selling charts......
I have not found any source for .kap files besides other cruisers. We are in Fiji and have been using .kap files made from GE2Kap files since Tonga.
I'm thinking of asking a fellow cruiser who posts a lot if she would mind setting up a repository of kap files on her website. Stay tuned.

I could contribute Philippine kap files if there was a repository.

Re: KAP Charts - Indonesia/PNG, Raja Ampat, Birds head Area
I don't know what a KAP chart is but we have just returned from that area and had GPS Cmap charts which were NOT accurate, at all, also the tide charts were totally inaccurate. We were in a 40ft aluminium trimaran with a 1ft 6inch draft and we still ran into mud banks and reefs. Not a place for Mono's with a deep keel.
NO wind except for squalls.
Indonesian Immigation offices interpert the laws different in each place. Plus beware of the locals (west papuan's) We were held hostage until we paid money.
Raja Ampat sounds cute but it costs big money to go there and the reefs off Australia are far better.
I would not go back, ever.
Beau

Re: KAP Charts - Indonesia/PNG, Raja Ampat, Birds head Area
.kap refers to the same file format as BSB charts. KAP refers to the file ending of part of the BSB file that contains the actual image and geo-referencing information.
Originally BSB were scanned paper charts with referencing information.
Could you please write a bit more of your experiences with the immigration and what fees you had to pay.

Re: KAP Charts - Indonesia/PNG, Raja Ampat, Birds head Area
Hi Jonas,
Merauke, West Papua, frontier town. Immigration took our passports and did not return them for two weeks demanded 1.3million ruphiah and a bottle of scotch. Westerners are not welcome.
The problem is that Indonesia controls West Papua and the locals do not like it.
They, the Indonesians do not want the West to see how they control the province (with the army and guns) which is necessary, by the way. Probably better than Papua new guinea.
You have to smile a lot, and understand you are in their country.
Everything is cheap but there is nothing to buy except fish and rice. Nobody speaks English.
Don't go there in my opinion.

Yeah, this is the problem in many areas of the Pacific and SE Asia. Detailed electronic charts simply don't exist for many areas. This is why people, like myself, scan or get hold of JPEGs of paper charts and geo-reference them so that they can be used with chartplotting software such as Open CPN.
The Edition 3 C-map charts are much better for the Philippines (with the exception of Puerto Gallera for some reason), but they don't run in Open CPN
Can't vouch for their accuracy in Indo or PNG though.

The Puerto Galera detailed chart was evidently created from the Philippine chart that uses Luzon datum, not WGS 84. The OpenCPN offsets I use for cell 03100362 are x= -150 y=150. These offsets agree well with tracks I've made in and out of PG. In fact, I am headed there tomorrow if this storm going north of Luzon doesn't interfere

Cheers Terry,
If you're sailing down from Subic I reckon your going to get some pretty strong headwinds.
The same TD is going to ruin our weekend over here - supposed to be racing Hong Kong to Macau Saturday morning.......hmmmmmm.....maybe not

Does something like this works for you?

Its made from a map overlaid with satellite data for bathymetry from Gebco and ref to lat/long plate carree WGS84. I have other CIA Tactical Operations Chart overlaid with bathy of the regions you mentioned. A word of caution though, the bathymetric data are not from actual ship soundings but derived from satellite scans rendered based on an algorithm and I have no idea as to their accuracy. The usual warning 'Not to be used for navigation' applies.
The image you see can be converted to KMZ format and loaded to a Garmin gps as what Garmin calls a Custom Map or even as a Superoverlay. The KMZ file can be loaded in Google Earth but I have not tried to capture it with GE2Kap yet. Drop a comment if you want them. otheriwse maps, not nautical charts, can be found at Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection - UT Library Online
