Is Expedition Software off topic for this forum?

I'm starting to play a little bit with Expedition.

It's not very widely supported on the internet, very little published reviews or youtube videos, etc.

Does anyone know of resources for me to learn about Expedition and it's quirks?

Also, how does every one like OpenCPN? Easy, or a career to set up and get good at?

Thanks!

Do you mean this software?

Expedition

For $1300 it would have to drive the boat, cook dinner and wash the dishes.

Also from what I read on the web site it seems made for racing.

Yes it's a racing platform. I would get to know OpenCPN just as a way to understand all of the integration, if similar, but for free instead of 1300 bucks and time wasted. I haven't spent the money on Expedition yet, still in trial mode. All of these softwares seems to use the same protocols and charts, same user interface, etc.

Basic nav functions of OpenCPN were, to me, totally easy and intuitive.

There's always SeaClear II free software too.

Re: Is Expedition Software off topic for this forum?

Expedition lets you use it in a free reduced-capability mode, so you can play with it. I paid for it years ago, and still get upgrades, and I use it for racing, and passagemaking. The WX routing is quite nice, but you need to have realistic polars for your boat.

That said, OpenCPN paired with NavMonPc gives me most everything I want for general use. As a matter of fact, I run NavMonPc with all my nav / comms programs. Of course I wrote it, so I could be biased.

Yes it's a race application that I'm trying to learn it for. Do you remember what was the most useful thing learned from the demo mode? Strong and weak points?

I'll look into your program as well.

Honestly, I never played much with demo mode. As I recall, demo will let you look at GRIBS and charts, but won't do the weather-routing. Expedition does have a lot of bells and whistles that I *don't* use, but more hardcore racers might. It's a very good program, but expensive.

OpenCPN has come a long way since it was first released so I suggest you see if it can do what you need. It even has some sort of WX routing capability, although I haven't tried it.

By the way, Expedition is locked to your computer, and to install it on another you need to ask for a new keycode. Fortunately the Expedition folks are good about this, and expect you to have it installed on a spare as well. I've installed my copy on more than a half-dozen computers over the years with no problems. You will need internet access to request and receive a new keycode, so plan for that -- don't expect to load it on a spare computer while you are at sea, unless you have email capability.

All of these programs take a fair bit of practice to get the most out of them. They all have features that are not intuitively obvious (to me at least), so I need to poke around and see what happens. And do it more than once lest I forget when I really need it.

I don't think you are a bit biased, Paul. I've been using NavMonPC for bunch of years and am very grateful for your efforts. I also think OpenCPN is quite good, especially for the price. SeaClear is alright if you can master the UI - it's a bit subtle in places. But why bother when OpenCPN is easier and more versatile.

Re: Is Expedition Software off topic for this forum?

Opencpn has a plugin that does weather_routing with grib_pi and climatology_pi. Estimating a 3090 mile transatlantic trip came within about 3 days I believe. The polars were adjusted downward by the owner to be more realistic. This was along a trade route.
