Installing open cpn on rpi 3

Being a sailor foremost and only a basic programmer I have tried for days to install the latest stable version of open cpn on to my new raspberry pi 3 (debian v. 6.3) with no success. Could you help with a script I could follow? Others like me would, I am sure, appreciate this also. My rpi 2 served well on my boat as a nav computer with ais transponder and gps before I in error applied over voltage to it. Many thanks.

Easiest way I know is to write the OpenPlotter image to your SD card. It should work right out of the box. Plus you get all the excellent OpenPlotter extras.

Re: installing open cpn on rpi 3

Now we have some minimal programming skills after we downloaded OpenCPN 4.4 directly from OpenCPN site and then did source code download on our new RPi3B for all the additional plugins we wanted. When first started we didn't really know what we were doing w/Linux coding.

We looked at the OpenPlotter and you needed to do a major download to get the program. To get this large file you needed to allow another program access to your computer. When we started to open this auxiliary download program, we got a warning of potentially opening access to personal information on your computer and why we stopped the process and went for direct down load for OpenCPN.

There are 2 sites that walk you through the process. Andersons Abroad and King Tide Sailing For most of the plugins, we went directly to the individual programmer pages on github to get the source codes. For example, Sean D'epagnier

So far (knock on wood), everything seems to be working.

Good luck.

Openplotter is available as a torrent download, commonplace file sharing and not risky unless you spend a lot of time looking for less legal downloads

It is a big download but well worth it, openplotter is a very powerful set of utilities

Re: installing open cpn on rpi 3

I have made my own distribution for raspberry called tiny pilot. It is based from tinycore linux.

The purpose is of course to run the free pypilot, but it can also run opencpn booting faster and more.

The actual complete sd image is only around 60MB, much smaller than openplotter.

Sean,
Please tell us more about your tiny pilot. Did a quick search and didn't find it.

Thanks.

Although it is free software, I didn't share it yet. I have it for myself at this time.

Latest information kernel 4.9.7

As for Linux kernel 4.9.7, it comes one week after the release of Linux kernel 4.9.6 and changes a total of 67 files, with 534 insertions and 239 deletions, according to the appended shortlog. The patch includes mostly updated drivers, in particular for the Intel i915 graphics driver, but also for things like InfiniBand, Radeon, VC4, ISDN, I2C, PINCTRL, Virtio, FBDEV, and networking.

VC4 support !

Everything updated to the latest version and kernel 4.9.9.

Runs very well with VC4 accellerated video.

Just bought a waterresistent 10" hdmi Touch monitor.

Latest OpenCPN. All seems to work. However after sometime working the HDMI screen quits with working. If I look with VNC, OpenCPN is still working.

Did the following trials:

Desktop Raspian OK no lockup of the screen

Run Raspian with OpenCPN OK no lockup of the screen

Run Raspian with OpenCPN and switch data from the Kplex multiplexer in OpenCPN for GPS and Ais to on.

This is working for some time (half an hour) and then the HDMI screen switches off with the message on the screen "no HDMI support".

I'am using OpenPlotter alpha 0.9.0

Is this a memory leak ? Or is there another cause ? Checking with VNC everything is still working. Sometimes the Desktop comes back after using VNC.

Any clue what is going on here ?

Re: Installing open cpn on rpi 3

Dear B-A,

just tried an older kernel version 4.4.44 V7+ and OpenCPn 4.4.0

With this setup there is no problem. There is a kind of screen saver that blinds the screen after some time. But a simple touch on the screen and the display is back again.

Is the problem lying on the screen saver ? With the former setup the screen also lock up, but did not recover with touching the screen. Is this screen saving part of the OpenCPN software ? And is there the problem ?

Regards,

Bram

Re: Installing open cpn on rpi 3

B-A,

do I have to send this Problem direct to the OpenCPN developers ? Or is a remark to you sufficent to put this in the right the direction ?

Re: Installing open cpn on rpi 3

At the moment I am still waiting for dust to settle in the open driver, but if you find regressions, perhaps you should narrow it down. If this issue isn't fixed in the next few versions we should investigate. For now, I would use the older kernel.

Re: Installing open cpn on rpi 3

B-A,

thanks for the reply. We do you think ? Is a problem with the VC4 driver ? Or is it the OpenCPN beta or the latest kernelversion 4.9.9 ?

Where comes this screen saver thing from ? Can it be switched off ? Although it is certainly a nice feature to save the screen and reducing power consumption.

This waterresistent daylight touch screen 10" uses 10 Watt.

The Boat here is still in the winterstorage. So there is no need to do other things then updaten to the latest (beta) versions ? The latest kernel 4.9 is updated very frequently.
