FYI, I have been working on a vessel icon that matches my boat; got it close but I need to switch the background to transparent or translucent, not sure which.
Easily done using the free GIMP2 program, load your icon in .gif format and select Layer and then Transparency. From the Toolbox select the 'Fuzzy select tool' (a wand) and click on all the background areas of your icon you want transparent. After each click, hit 'Del' on your keyboard. You will end up with a black and white chequered background.
Finally save the icon in .xpm format. Now place it in your UserIcons directory.

Re: Icons . . . Help Me !

I've set up a UserIcon library here if anybody is interested:
4shared folder - UserIcons

Re: Icons . . . Google Earth?

With a bit of searching and manipulation I created one but don't like the black square background around it. Can change the background color but still working on getting a circle.

Attached is an image of it, not the .xpm icon which can't be uploaded.

That's a .jpg. You can't do transparencies with a .jpg, and transparencies is what you need. Try doing the original as a .gif. Or if your graphics software handles .xpm natively, just do it that way. Then google for your graphics program and "add transparency" or "add transparent layer" or "add alpha channel". Probably any one of those searches would find what you need.

for Windows, try (freebie) Greenfish Icon Editor (or the Gimp or Xnview that others prefer)
in GFIE,you can just erase the background and it makes it transparent..save as xpm and ignore the dialogue about losing info..

see also this post...
Free OpenCPN Icons

because xpms are just text files,really..you can change the black to transparent thataway!
(note the "X none " bit)

Re: Icons . . . Help Me !

Mike...
you have to create a folder named UserIcons and place the icon images there

Re: Icons . . . Help Me !

Mike...
create a folder named Layers (at the same level as UserIcons) and put the GPX files there. If you want to have them as layers, of course. Otherwise just import them in Route Manager.
