Icons for OpenCPN

I made a bunch of freeware user icons (organised descriptive names) for OpenCPN in .xpm format.
Would OpenCPN be interested in using these icons and posting it on their website?

Re: Icons for OpenCPN

While these icons are nice, they will be of limited use within OpenCPN itself. The IHO has very specific symbololgy that can be used for chart displays. You can find this in standard S-52.

I don't think man overboard markers are specified in S-52, so that icon could be used. But I think pretty much everything else is. Which is unfortunate, because I think some of these are much superior - especially the buoyage.

I not quite sure what you mean - please explain.
It's no problem for me to redo the icons if required.

Re: Icons for OpenCPN

I created an User Icon page on the wiki User Icons | Official OpenCPN Homepage . Easiest way to get it, is through the "Download" sub-menu. Still basic, but a start.
Any suggestions for improving it is welcome.

Happy Seagull! can you put all your icons in one zip file and mail it to me?
Anymore Icons that I have missed?
It would be nice with a picture, similar to MooseMoney's for each set.
Anyone feel like doing the missing ones?
Thomas

I'm willing to do any missing icons.
But which icons are missing?

The IHO has a very specific library of symbols that must be used on any chart, whether it's paper or an electronic display. This is so that symbols are common for everyone and also so that there is no confusion about what part of a symbol represents the item's actual location. For example, your buoyage symbols have no dot on them to represent the buoy's charted position. Also, all colours must match the IHO standard.

IHO standard S-52 is where the library of mandatory chart symbols and colours are defined. Right down to the mandatory formulae to use to convert colours from one colour space to another. There is a CD you can get from the IHO that has these symbols in electronic format. I'm assuming that the OpenCPN developers have this CD and is where they get the symbology from.

So while your icons are great, they can't be used on any system that wants to be IHO-compliant.

Thank you for this information. I Google'd and found some information.
It appears that the following chart symbol standards apply;

NOS National Ocean Service (US)
NIMA National Imagery and Mapping Agency (US)
IHO International Hydrographic Organization

I take it that the IHO standards would be the one most desirable. However, I find their symbols plain and boring.
