Icon Missing on Windows 8.1 version 3.3.1731

On my Windows 8.1 computer the icon on my desktop for OpenCPN 3.3.1731 is blank. On my Windows Vista and Ubuntu 12.04 computers the icon is a stylized chart with an italic O in the bottom right corner. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just some weirdness with my system?

That's good to know. Any Windows 8 users who can comment on the issue?

Thanks. That makes me think it's a local problem. I'm going to try reinstalling to see if it fixes it.

Re: Icon Missing on Windows 8.1 version 3.3.1731

I downgraded to 3.2.2. Still no icon. I downloaded 3.3.1731 again and installed it. Still no icon. So I deleted the shortcut from my desktop, found OpenCPN.exe in the program files directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN) and created a new shortcut by sending it to the desktop. I had to rename it from "OpenCPN Shortcut" to "OpenCPN 3.3.1731" and move it to the Public desktop, but I have the icon back. I'll be watching to see it if is preserved after the next beta. I have no idea why it went away but there is no evidence it is a program problem, just some glitch on my system.

Re: Icon Missing on Windows 8.1 version 3.3.1731

I thought I had the problem solved, but when I installed 3.3.1824 the icon on my Windows 8.1 system went blank again. If this affects more than just me I expect there will be further discussion as Windows 8 users install the new beta. If it's just me, I hope someone who understands how the icon imagery is created might be able to help me figure out what's happening.

Fabbian,
I have installed OpenCPN for a harbour neighbor with Windows 8 and have seen the same behavior. After a new start the icon was there however. It's the wonderful world of Windows...

Re: Icon Missing on Windows 8.1 version 3.3.1731

Gerhard,

Thanks for that report. Multiple restarts didn't restore my icon but I managed to get it back by opening the shortcut's properties and clicking the "Change icon" button. The correct icon was the only one in the list. So I have a workaround that's better than my previous one of creating my own shortcut from OpenCPN.exe.

I'm puzzled, though, as to why this should happen. I don't think we can lay the blame entirely on Windows because I don't have the problem with Windows Vista and other programs installed on Windows 8 don't fail to create icon images on the desktop.

What bothers me about this is that it is new behavior. I have installed several updates to OpenCPN on Windows 8 with no problems. The missing icon issue arose (for me) with 3.3.1731 and continued with 3.3.1824. It certainly bears watching.

Re: Icon Missing on Windows 8.1 version 3.3.1731

Fabbian,
I guess it might have something to do with the way Minisoft tries to fight against malware and it's settings for that. I have installed latest betas for other users at XP and Win7 without that behavior. However this Win8 machine was so secured that I even have had problems to install a GPS connection. I'm not Win freak however...

Re: Icon Missing on Windows 8.1 version 3.3.1731

The only security software I have running on my Windows 8 computer is Microsoft's Windows Defender. It hasn't given me any trouble installing any other software.

I haven't tried to install a GPS connection on the W8 computer because I know my BU-353 isn't compatible with W8. I haven't tried connecting my Garmin GPS 72 to the W8 computer because I assume my cheap RS-232 to USB adapter is also incompatible with W8.

I haven't had any trouble with OpenCPN on Windows Vista or Windows 7 (both with Microsoft Security Essentials, which was renamed Windows Defender for W8). I dumped W7 for Ubuntu a couple betas back, so I no longer have a W7 test platform.

We need to hear from more W8 users who have installed the latest betas to figure out what is going on.

Windows is my least favorite operating system but it's the one I am most familiar with. I don't have any of these troubles on my Ubuntu computer but I have a much harder time figuring out how to do anything. Thirty years ago I was pretty conversant with Unix commands but I've forgotten almost all of that now.
