Post Icon Discussion

I'd like to polish up some of the lackluster icons for the new 2.xx release. One of the ones I'd like to change is the "goto ship / follow ship" icon. So, lets have a poll on some options.

1. Red

2. Yellow

3. Blue

4. Green

5. None, I have a better Idea that I would like to share.

Icon context is this:

Will,

I like the old icon but in green - as green for "GO". Also, for me the new track, route, current, and tide icons are to busy. My eyes/mind try to break the icon down into each component and identify what it represents. I suggest that for tides and currents that the icons be as close to what is shown on the chart for the tide and current stations. How about a green box with a black "T" for tide stations, and a orange box with rotated 45 degs and a black "C" for current stations. For me the old track icon is just fine. Since the other route functions are just a right click away, why do we need an icon for the toolbar?

I am afraid that the circular shape especially in the red version is too close to the look of an oldfashened life bouy, and could be seen as MOB button. Maybee if you removed one of the circles it would be better.

Speaking of which, would be lovely to have an MOB icon actually

What's wrong about the already existing one?
SourceForge.net Repository - [opencpn] View of /opencpn/src/bitmaps/mob.png
But it should be integrated in the toolbar at last.

Just some more visuals for the discussion
1. 2.
3. 4.
5.

Maybe it is time to think about to make OCPN "skinable"?
At least to find a way to easily use custom icon sets ... .

#5 green looks good, there's lots of green and blue in the icons already so perhaps it'll blend in nicely?

simple

OK, looks like green is in. I've simplified this also as suggested.

Viking... I've also simplified the route and track icons. I don't think we'll be going as simple as you'd like (notched sticks and such), but perhaps a compromise.

And, here is how it looks all together:

Will....

Please consider Cagney's comment about compass rose being too dark.

Thanks

I'd +1 that, although everybody was complaining about it being too brash beforehand hehe

By the way, could these have tooltips upon mouseover indicating what it is and/or what the state is? The other icons do this and I feel it may make them more intuitive to the novice.

Allow customising the icon bars

I like to be able to minimize the number of icons.
Like removing the *shift to larger/smaller scale* as the zoom in/out works fine with my set of charts and the *shift to larger/smaller* has no effect.
It keeps the interface for crew members simple and they seem to appreciate that.

The new icon for *where is my boat* is great but could be just the boat and nothing else.

good luck and thanks for all the work
(wish I could program soemtimes)

He's right, it's hard to decipher. This might be better:

Other status icons:
No GPS or Invalid GPS data

Active/Valid GPS data

Active/Valid GPS data + GPS reporting 0 - 4 satellites

Active/Valid GPS data + GPS reporting 5 - 9 satellites

Active/Valid GPS data + GPS reporting 10+ satellites

Ok, taking some of your advice here and going a whole new simpler direction.

Thoughts?

For you compilers... extract and drop icons.cpp and icons.h into src/bitmaps/
opencpn_520a_beta_icons.tar.bz
