For iPad you need to buy the 3G, 4G versions. These have full gps built in.To use cm93 on iPad I suggest the SeaIQ app.

Re: I want to buy a tablet / iPad with integrated GPS system!

Hi everybody

I would like to expand this thread a little. I really like the idea of a tablet for navigation onboard. So far the hardware was missing. Windows tablets were scarce an slow and Linux support was rudimentary or simply not there especially with regards to graphic support (Intels GMA 3600 or GMA 600). With Windows 8 there will be a whole bunch of new tablets with more processing power, some of them even water resitent, long battery life and hopefully better Linux support. Some will even have an AMD processor (they have generally been good to the linux folks). With Open CPN for Navigation (and hopefully soon broadband radar support), OTVlm for weather and routing and fldigi for NAVTEX and WFax there is really no need for Windows software anymore.

It would be great if other forum members could write about their experience with their tablets. I tried the dell latitude st. Too slow for windows, so far no graphic support under
Linux for the GMA 600. I like the Samsung 7 tablet and I have been looking at the new Fujitsu tabs (e.g. theq572 with an AMD chip). Maybe others could share their thought.

Re: I want to buy a tablet / iPad with integrated GPS system!

I have used both the iPad and an Android based Nexus 7 for navigation. I use Navimatics for the iPad and MxMariner (loosely affiliated with OpenCpn) for the Nexus 7. OpenCapn is not available for the iPad or the Androids.

Both are basic, simple navigators without all of the bells and whistles of OpenCpn or the heavier duty commercial programs. But they both work fine. I never use routes and on full featured chartplotters rarely use single waypoints. Both are available on these products but I can't tell you how they work.

But I just point the course arrow where I want to go, or alternatively find the necessary bearing to get where I want to go and adjust the boat's actual COG to match.

I can't recall how the iPad does charts, maybe it downloads them as you go because the iPad with built in GPS is also the one with 3G so internet connectivity is (almost) always there.

MxMariner on the Nexux 7, having only wifi connectivity, allows you to download one or more NOAA chart regions so that the cartography is always available. It takes a fair amount of memory, about 300 mb per region, so you may want to buy the higher memory Nexus 7 if you want to use it up and down the east coast.

I like them both, they work well and both are great backups for installed chartplotters or stand alone navigators for casual use.

Suggest you study the threads on Galaxy 10.1 Tab and also the one about TeamViewer, both on this page.

Also about OruxMaps and navigation on the Navigation page.

With all the clever software and apps available, you can keep your laptop with good processing power and lots of storage safely down below while you take complete control from an Android tablet with a protective cover in the cockpit.
