I Can't Open PolyConic Charts - Can Anyone Help ?

I like OpenCPN but a lot of my charts won't open...even though it's said they will.These charts work fine with VisNav and Ozi but I do like Opencpn's easier Gui and availability of Vector charts too. These are Canadian Kaps.Usually harbour plans,so they are very handy.I can see them plain as thumbnails on the bottom bar and the cone thingy is there but they show on main screen as vertical lines.They are circa 1996 and obviously derived from old Parizeau and his Assistants (My Gods!) with NAD27 Datum I have gone through some tedious hoops to convert 'em using some tools mentioned here and then they'll work.It's very tedious.I've tried editing the header too but Opencpn isn't fooled. Something obvious I'm missing?

Without any facts in your case it's hard to say.
What does your log-file say?
Can you publish your header file?
Even better would be if I could have a look at a sample of the original files and your conversion. PM me if you like.

I have seen it before......
Probably something wrong with your tiff image or the number of colors in the -c argument to tiff2bsb.
Sometimes this happens when starting with a tiff in the wrong format. It may still need some "conversion", to "cooperate".
I need to have a look at either the tiff image used with tif2bsb or the original picture.

Thomas

PS I just noticed the "7"...and your spacing after some"="
Change this line
Code:
    PP=-128.4790, PI= 0.50000,SP=UNKNOWN,7 SK= 0.00
    UN=FATHOMS,SD=LNT,DX= 2.43,DY= 2.43
to
Code:
    PP=-128.4790, PI=0.50000,SP=UNKNOWN,SK=0.00
    UN=FATHOMS,SD=LNT,DX=2.43,DY=2.43
Then run "bsbfix" on the file. Reload the chart database and try again.

Thomas,thanks.
Ok,I'm on it.I tried to cheat and just edit the Kap file per above but that didn't work well at all.The thumbnail disappeared.And the chart soon after(from the selection bar)

My Dos CMD skills are poor and slow.

Still,I've had success by opening the offenders in OziExp,creating a new "map" file as MERCATOR,exporting the bmp,editing that exported map file to point at the bmp,loading it in MapCal, and thereby getting the CHARTCAL.DIR,converting the bmp to pngs and tiff with Irfanview and finally?running all this through mc2bsbh and tiff2bsb.(Likely missed something in the description)
But Success.Now OpenCPN likes it just fine as a mercator.but AAARGH too many of these...I will see if I can PM you some of the smaller polyconic kaps.And a conversion too.

And heres a header from one that I HAVE done per above...and it shows up fine in OpenCPN. ! Created by mc2bsbh beta09 - Use at your own risk! VER/2.0 BSB/NA=FALSE BAY NU=,RA=3069,3003,DU=0 KNP/SC=6000,GD=NAD83,PR=MERCATOR,PP=UNKNOWN PI=UNKNOWN,SP=UNKNOWN,SK=0.0,TA=90.0 UN=UNKNOWN,SD=UNKNOWN DX=0,DY=0 It could be better but getting "it" at all is most of the battle.Unfortunately,I can't remember if I tried all this first as a Polyconic...

No,they aren't converted charts by the way.I tried bsbfix but apart from some cryptic repeating lines and the usual "nonguic" blather with or without "-d" . here's a working,converted header:
! Created by mc2bsbh beta09 - Use at your own risk!
VER/2.0
BSB/NA=FALSE BAY
NU=,RA=3069,3003,DU=0
KNP/SC=6000,GD=NAD83,PR=MERCATOR,PP=UNKNOWN
PI=UNKNOWN,SP=UNKNOWN,SK=0.0,TA=90.0
UN=UNKNOWN,SD=UNKNOWN
DX=0,DY=0
I can't remember if I tried leaving it as Polyconic in my first attempts.Likely did though.I don't mind the little cone-I just want to see the chart.

You are right,Islander!...Using Vers.1.3.6-there they are!

I'll wander about in my pile and make sure that all show but I bet you have it.

Luckily I actually had a few Canadian charts, and found about 65 Polyconical BC charts.
First, in OpenCPN 1.3.6 Polyconical charts were treated as Mercator charts and displayed OK.
With 2.1.0 came "quilting" and problems connected with this.
Polyconical charts came up when BlueGillBoy had problems quilting Polyconical US Raster Charts covering the Great Lake Area. These Charts are BSB ver 3, and works fine with OpenCPN 2.3.1. I'm sure that Dave did not know about these Canadian charts. I was unaware of their existence until yesterday. One reason for this is that these charts earlier was treated as Mercator, so the problem was hided.
Just changing the PR and PP vales n the header brings these charts back up as Mercator charts. So it's a bug in the handling of these Polyconical charts.
I also found another "hidden problem" among the Canadian BC charts.
The charts 344102.KAP ,344101.KAP and344001.KAP have the prjection type "PR=UTM". The code is only looking for the word "TRANSVERSE" when classifying a chart as a TMERC, hence these charts are then classified as mercator. They don't show up at all because with UTM the PP value is the longitude and with Mercator it is the latitude(simplyfied). Guess what happens with a latitude of -128 !!
So these are clearly bugs and I have entered them in the tracker as#325 and #326.

In my mind this is making a strait forward thing really complicated, and creating a "crap" header in the process.
I have published a script,link on this page Chart Formats | Official OpenCPN Homepage, that directly converts an ozi map + pic to a kap. It may need some tweaking for windows, but works really well for me on Linux.

The roundabout way of creating a header file via MapCal etc obviously has its pitfalls. In the end the user must be able to judge the header file anyway.
In your case for example you get these unreasonable values.
DU=0 ,don't think so! Available from "tiffinfo" for example
PP=UNKNOWN , anyone can do better than that!
UN=UNKNOWN , published on any chart
SD=UNKNOWN, published on most charts

To fix these charts now, and not wait for a bugfix release:
Polyconical: Change PR to MERCATOR in a binary/hex editor.
Set PP to ~ the middle latitde of the chart
Run "bsbfix" on the edited file.
Don't expect perfect quilting with these charts

UTM:Change UTM to "TRANSVERSE MERCATOR" , run bsbfix as above.
These charts will not quilt.

Then run "Force full database rebuild" to make sure the changes reaches the chart database.

SD=UNKNOWN, published on most charts

Goodtips!I'll integrate em as I can figure em out!...I have about 25 Polyconical here that I've spotted...Yes,latelyI've been including scale and depth units from the chart legend now that I know what'll work!And they are all NAD27 so there's some datum shifting about to do as well-I won't know how good That is until I get back to these places but by then,I'll just whip all this out and spit out a corrected,notated chart on a single tack!

I can hope for a "fix"in OpenCPN but anyways, all of this has me noticing that certain of the larger polyconic originals have INSET CHARTS that are not individually calibrated....I'm guessing they didn't bother in 1995.So I've been chopping these out (that I haven't got already as poly discrete duplicates) and calibrating 'em MapCal-mcbsbh- tif2bsb.They show very well at least-as to quilting,just now,they would work better for me if the Polyconics were removed from the directory!(but I won't do that yet ...I don't actually like the quilting on with this pile anyways).

KapGen

Maybe KapGen can help you. At least the readme of kapgen (MCE66 - Software) can give you some ideas.

For example, regarding UTM:

Code:
   TRANSVERSE MERCATOR:
Lat0 is 0. If the map is in Transverse Mercator just leave
MapCal-II to calculate Lon0. If the Map is in Universal Transverse
Mercator (UTM) you must read the Fuse or Zone (1 to 60), then calculate
Lon0 = Fuse*6-183. Ex. Zone=15 -> Lon0 = 15*6-183 = -93 (93°W)
Ciao, Marco.
