How long should OpenCPN take to process?

I have a mac with a 2.6 intel core i7.

I did spend a few hours in the manual and this site before I posted...

I downloaded the ENC / Vector files for Florida. Per the friendly manual I clicked: Prepare all ENC Charts. . Since then I have had one core at 99.9% for openCPN. that was over 24 hrs ago.... Is it hung? Do I force quit? will it finish before dinner or the earth cools?

tks

Not normal at all.

Abort.
In the log file you might see if it stalls at one single chart.
In case reload this one.

Maybe there is a corrupted chart? Is this a new install or one that was running well? Sounds like it is a new installation of O.

There should be a progress bar.

There should be a progress bar. But on MAC sometimes a window can be beneath the main window.

I would recommend not using the prepare all ENC chart feature. Go to the charts tab of options and tell O to scan and rebuild the chart database. But don't prepare all ENC charts. Then use O normally. It will prepare each ENC chart as needed. If one chart is damaged and causing the issue you will eventually run into it but there should be a dialog listing the name of the offending file.

Thanks for tips. This was is a new install. In the future I think I will ignore the
Getting started advise to prepare all charts. I also added the Florida RNC, but only downloaded those I need for the next while. Can see I will be following that as I plan going further afield.

Prepare all charts should work. I am just suggesting this as a way to hopefully find the issue.

Please explain in detail what you would change in this section of the wiki.
I can make those changes for you. Just write it the way you'd like to see it.
I have no idea what mislead you.
Thanks.

Rick,

The suggestion to “prepare all ENC charts” for newbies means it is necessary even though the wiki doesn’t say so. If you have a lot of charts it can take an overly long time.

Here is the wiki link to the command "Prepare all ENC charts"
I agree that the way this is worded, to a literalist and none native english speaking person, it sounds like it must be done.

1. Perhaps this should be taken care of by careful translation.
2. For the English version we might be able to improve this wording, but it won't change until the next version.
3. I can make this button clearer in the manual for the time being.

Ideas:
"Process all ENC Charts to Senc"
(Batch process which takes a long time and is not required)

I've added a first line:
"Batch processes all ENC Charts to Senc format, which can take a long time and is not required. "

Also I've rewritten and improved the language in that item.

It's perfectly understandable even for a non native english person, except mistype on the last word : "desk" instead of "disk".

Thanks jean_pfoumf, with respect, apparent xenophobia notwithstanding...
