High resolution map

I have a problem with the high resolution maps. I have downloaded the files and unzipped them. I have created a folder called gshhs under Program Files and OpenCPN in windows. Do I need to do anything else? Any help much appreciated.

Re: High resolution map

Ulric...
If you had to create the gshhs folder, then something is wrong, it already exists in "x:\Program Files\OpenCPN" after the installation and you should just copy the hires files into it.

Re: High resolution map

Make sure your path to OpenCPN looks like this,

C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN\

Your gshhs folder should be in the OpenCPN folder,

C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN\gshhs

I renamed the stock 'gshhs' folder 'gshhs-bak' so I could easily restore it if I decide to remove the high res version.

Re: High resolution map

Many thanks Pavel and Steve! I have made sure that the extracted files are in (the already after first installation) existing folder with path C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN\gshhs. However, I can still not see the high resolution maps when I restart OpenCPN. Do I need to activate them in some way?

Best regards,

Ulric

Re: High resolution map

Ulric...
You don't have to configure or enable anything, OpenCPN simply uses the hi-res data when it is next started.
This is the difference you should see (same La Manche area on both screenshots)
With the default low resolution basemap

After adding the high resolution data

Re: High resolution map

Sorry, I must be slow. I look at the maps available and they look just like the ones posted here.....not very HI-res. So I followed a link to the NOAA site and downloaded the enc Hi res there...they will not unzip as there is an error. Obviously pilot error but I cannot get the detailed maps up. Ideas? In a windows 7 system.

Re: High resolution map

rbrentp...
Here we talk about the basemap covering the whole planet, not about the navigational charts, which you need to get for your particular sailing area.
The easiest way to get you going I can suggest is to get the chart downloader plugin and it will take care of the download an unpacking of the freely available charts for you and tell you what you have to do to enable them (or do the whole configuration for you as well if you are using OpenCPN 4.1 beta and the latest build of the plugin).

Re: High resolution map

Pavel, many thanks for pointing this out! I hadn't realised that the higher resolution was already there when I zoom in.
