bluetooth GPS

As I'm not having a lot of internet time I need to post a question about bluetooth GPS. It started working for me with the open cpb 4.0 version and my new laptop but it only works well when my speed is above 2.5 knots or something like that. If below 2.5 knots it will update the posistion sometimes. Is this a know problem? Thx

Re: Help / FAQ

This might be a "feature" of the GPS.

When you monitor the NMEA debug window (communication settings), what do you observe?
Do you have a manual for the GPS? Something like a velocity threshold mentioned?

Re: Help / FAQ

There are known GPS devices for streetcar use which stops to work when not moving.

Re: Help / FAQ

I can't see any difference in the nmea debug window, there is always information coming in but I guess I need to start looking for the software of my receiver and change some settings. I got an old receiver without sofware and I can't find it for now.

I have an ADAPT Marathon Bluetooth GPS Ontvanger, Sirf III - 20 Kanalen. If somebody knows where to search, help is welkom.

Re: Help / FAQ

Have you used GPSinfo to see what the settings are? Or Sirfdemo?
Here is one link, not necessarily the best.

Re: Help / FAQ

open cpn is not user friendly. i have wasted much time trying to download charts to my mac. the instructions are not complete and the screen shown (add a directory containing chart files) does not show up. frustrating. i guess like so much in the wayof computers, you have to be steve jobs to figure it out. the promise is soooo much greater than the reality.

longjohnsilver...
What exactly are you missing in the instructions when you say they are not complete?

Thanks

Re: Help / FAQ

Dear OpenCPN gurus - I just upgraded from Win8.1 to Win10. Now I find that OpenCPN v4.0 doesn't display my KAP files (of which I have several thousand). If I turn off OpenGL acceleration, OpenCPN then displays the KAPs, but scrolling around takes forever.

Did MSFT rip OpenGL out of Win10? Or did they change it so OpenCPN can't access it? Am I stuck with either no KAPs or slow KAPs?

Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

To start off, see if you can upgrade the video drivers. Then post the log file. Do vector charts work in opengl mode?

Re: Help / FAQ

I had to upgrade my video drivers to get good performance too but it was a slightly different problem.

Thanks Alexandra. I upgraded my GeForce driver (which OpenCPN is not supposed to use - it's supposed to use the integrated Intel 4600) & the problem went away. Very strange, but I'm OK now.

Re: Help / FAQ: Course to Steer

To find my CTS I draw a route ABC, then with the M measure at A add the tidal stream vector, AD, Then from D to somewhere on the ABC line for a set distance , Length AB, thats my CTS, like on a paper chart. Is there a better way? How do I make that line DE stick, and is there a way I can somehow write that CTS on the chart. Thanks.

Re: Help / FAQ: Course to steer

Found out I could easily use the same waypoints and use route again, which solves my problem. Would be nice if the properties could be changed to lines with two or lines with three arrows. Currently there is only default, dots and dashes.

Re: Help / FAQ

Hi All,
Newbie to OpenCPN with a newbie question.
Running Win7Pro - sp1
Downloaded and installed the latest version.
Downloaded and installed charts "RNC Product Catalog 06 Region" using "ChartDownloader".

As this instance of OpenCPN is just running on my work station, there are no NMEA0186 devices attached. So no heading nor GPS inputs.

The problem that I'm having is the interlacing of chart #11553.
None of this chart's, 3 sections, are showing up properly on the screen.
The red outline is there, but the chart does not show until I zoom into the charts area and click on the most lefthand bar at the bottom of the screen.

Then it shows up but is totally out of place and orientation.

Here is a screen shot link showing where Chart 11553 should show.

What am I doing wrong?
