I have downloaded the stable version of CPN 2.1.0, and am studying the new
manual, which states that its important to know the location of the Log file.
I have Window 7 on my computer and have tried the manual's instructions many
times with no results. I am poor with computers, my memory is bad but have
been playing with GPS and electronics since my 1st Bermuda Race in 1958.
Can you help me access this file...perhaps with cookbook type instructions?
Thank you. Seth Morrison

Seth,

Go to Start -> "Search programs and files"
Enter Code: %APPDATA%\opencpn
Click OK!

Have a good luck!

Links between OPENCPN and POLARCOM

Hello there.
I love OPENCPN but the GUIDANCE DATA are too small (XTK, BRG, etc..).
Is it possible to links OPENCPN with POLARCOM?
In fact send XTK BRG RNG DTG TTG to POLAR indicators.

You have done a terrific job there, better or equal to the best production Navigation Software.

Thanks a lot
I beg your pardon for my poor English but I am French (nobodies perfect)

Hi,
it's actually the preferred solution now. You just have to do it the other way - let Polarcom share the data with OpenCPN.
More possibilities discussed in NMEA Instruments | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Hello! If somebody can help me with OpenCPN issue?

I run Windows 7 64bit on my laptop. For position input I use Bluetooth GPS. It work nice and provide NMEA to application as VisualGPS & TurboGPS. Also, I can get signal from Windows 7 location sensor using GPSDirect NMEA Sensor Driver for Windows 7.

After installing Open CPN everything was work nice, until I try to open downloaded GRIB data. Application finish to respond, and I manually close it. Windows ask me to just close it or check for solution and close. I select second option. After that Open CPN not see any COM port in my system. Another application work nice and get NMEA from COM port. I already try to reinstall OpenCPN (also try beta), Bluetooth GPS, change COM port number and data rate, restart computer.

Please help me to help OpenCPN found COM port.

Thanks for advance.

Hallo, Grog,
My situation is quite same (Windows7 64bit OS with BT GPS device). Also tried to open grib file with GPS connected to Opencpn, everything is working OK. May be your GPS is connected to other software (instead of opencpn). Try temporarily disable the software which might use the GPS, and leave opencpn only.
Good luck!
Mati

Thanks for response.
No, I not try to share COM port with other software, just use it to check that COM & GPS in working condition one by one, not together.
Also, first time than it was successful connection of OpenCPN with GPS I have to start it with Administrator privileges.

OpenCNP start work nice again.
Unfortunately I don't know how it was fixed, I connect second GPS and just change COM port number from 4 to 8 and all COM ports appears in selection inside OpenCPN settings menu.

OpenCPN Feedback on Help

OpenCPN 2.10 documentation download on the OpenCPN website has the chapter links pointing at the website rather than anchors in the html file itself. This means that when you are offline you will get error messages when clicking on these links.

So scroll down or search instead.

The earlier help download does not have this problem.

I am posting here because I don't know how else to give feedback

Thanks Jack for reminding me.
Your observation is correct, and we know about it. It's because we use a snapshot of the wiki for documentation, and the wiki script needs some tweaking to correct for this.
All this happened in a rush just before the release of 2.1.0.
I will enter this as a bug in Fly Spray OpenCPN::Tracker OpenCPN - stable: Tasklist

Question re dancing boat.

I have installed the latest stable OpenCPN on laptop with windows XP and set up BU353 GPS puck successfully. Easy as! I see the position perfectly. The boat direction (icon) randomly rotates even though I am at rest. I presume it is responding satellite by satellite. Is there any way to correct this?
Apologies if this question has been asked in another thread.
Thanks in advance.

This is caused by very small errors in fix positioning and OpenCPN thinks the boat has moved in that direction thus the cursor change. It probably says you are moving at .1 knots.

Thanks Colorman, You are correct. SOG is anything up to 2 knots. (and I haven't moved)

Next question - how do I compensate to nullify the effect?

Some programs average the last 10 fixes, don't think there is an option in Ocpn for this. Maybe a feature request?
