Anyway.. yeah.. it should let you cancel isobar generation if it is taking forever. Also I could probably optimize the isobar routine to run about 20 times faster.. but I'm doing other stuff.
Got it. Thanks.

Re: Grib Enhancements

I find a problem with the grib plugin under windows, when i first look at a current oscar grib, and the look at GFS from sail mail. I have to restart OpenCPN in order to see the wind parameters.

Re: Grib Enhancements

Hi,

I've read a few comments from Rick that two instances of the GRIB PI can be run simultaneously. How do I do this??
Is it something that needs to be coded into OCPN?
Or is there some way to "manually" launch a lib file?

I'm not a coder, but anything short of code cutting I'm fine with.

Running OpenCPN Version 3.3.814 Build 2013-08-14 under Ubuntu 12.04

Cheers

Re: Grib Enhancements

Yes, in windows it works. I copy grib_pi to another name (add 2 at the end). The enable both grib_pi.dll in options/plugins. Now load two separate gribs, one for Wind and the other for the separate Currents grib. [Don't know why we have to have them in separate gribs! Maybe too big?]

I'd like to know if this works for Linux. (Thanks for reading..Smile)

And yes, it seems to make sense to have a utililty to join the data into one file, or make grib_pi capable of reading both files. They have to be of the same area of course.

Have asked for this in Tracker. ADD YOUR VOTE!!!! Please.

Re: Grib Enhancements

I should have thought of that! *slaps forehead*

Yes, works is Linux too.

By some magic I get both wind & waves in one grib. I use zygrib or airmail. What source do you use?

I'm wanting different areas, a local wind/wave/precip as the file size becomes crazy. And a separate MSLP grib for 0-60s, 130E-160W which is a huge area, but not a lot of data, so the file is again reasonable.

Yup, voted & commented in tracker.

Have you noticed the grib PI doesn't preserve settings between sessions? Or is this a Linux thing (or am I missing something ) (note, I'm running a beta release)

Cheers

We now have confirmed a proof of concept for both Linux and Windows! Fixing this should be easy IMHO, I hope Jean Pierre sees this and can add the feature.

We need people to VOTE in tracker for this feature.

Re: Grib Enhancements

Hi
Many grib viewers use the knots unit for the wind arrows even if I choose m/s for figures. I am so to say used to that maybe odd behaviour. But the OCPN grib plugin uses m/s for both. There are a couple of benefits out of the mixed units.
1. As said many other weather sites use the mixed units so for consistency also OCPN would be able to do so?
2. The arrow resolution is better using knots and at least I am used to simultaneously translate.
I'd like to have the option viewing the arrows in one unit and the figures in another.
Anyone else having the same opinion on this I can add it to the Tracker.

Re: Grib Enhancements

Hakan,
Let me understand better.
You want "Wind Arrows" [Not the ones with the feathers] to stay in Knots even if you choose Meters/Second for other data-types? - Also what are the "figures"?
-Sorry to be so thick.

How would you suggest doing that within the multi-data Grib Preferences format that Grib_pi has right now such that there is no confusion and the intent is clear?

Re: Grib Enhancements

Rick..
Yes it's very welcomed to ask when I'm not making myself understandable.
By the "arrows" i mean those with the "feathers". In the .pot called "Barbed Arrows"
By figures I mean the integers in the field, e.g. 10 m/s
In the configuration window it could be solved by another unit choose. One additional for the barbed arrows.
(If you choose the unit m/s in the configuration window you'll see that the arrows now also change to half the numbers of barbs.)
Clear?

Re: Grib Enhancements

Hi Hakan, rgleason

A convention is commonly used in the weather community to show wind force through wind barbed arrow as 1/2 feather = 5kts , an entire feather = 10kts, two feathers = 20kts and so on.
I am not sure it makes sens to draw 1/2 feather when using m/s and an entire feather when using knots for the same wind speed of 5/ms = 10kts.
The same problem for others units.

So I agree, barbed arrows should be always drawn in knots whatever unit is used to show values in the other representations.

It was a question I asked to myself when I thought to show wind in Beaufort (fs#993) and may be it's time to decide...

Jean Pierre
