Re: GPS Receiver BU-353

I'm guessing you are looking at the stream info outside of OpenCPN with a utility like GPSinfo or GPSutility.

Is the boat icon grey or red? If grey, OpenCPN is not seeing the gps data.

Also note the color of the upper right icon with a satellite and compass symbol. Green or red? Green is good to go, red means no data connection.

Check the tools settings (wrench icon) at the GPS tab. Check to be sure the data source field indicates your puck connection port. And note if the baud rate is correct.

Also you might connect in Google Earth to verify function as well.

If your seeing a data stream, most likely the settings in OpenCPN need reviewing and correcting.

... This exact message OFTEN means your gps port # has changed, or the gps isn't on, or it hasn't got access to the gps, so OpenCPN can't find it when starting. OpenCPN remembers your configuration as it is when you turn it off.
If you set the gps port# to none or the new changed one, the message will go away. and as four winds is saying, you can't use an outside app at the same time unless you are running a port emulator...
OpenCPN also has a tool to see data stream so your post is a little confusing. If you are using Open cpn and the boat hasn't moved and is grey, it means there is no satellite fix,I bet.

Boat icon is grey, indicators at top right are red.
The GPS stream information in the GPS toolbox is showing a stream of data at one second intervals (I thought this indicated a connection with the satellite...obviously not). Checked device manager and it says COM3, baud 9600 which I have set in OpnCpn toolbox.
I'm not using GPSInfo or GPS Utility...don't know what they are.

I will double check again in a minute and see if it changes anything.

Re: GPS Receiver BU-353

Surprise surprise!

I took the PC outside...where it can see a satellite I guess....and the boat icon has turned red, bars at top right corner are green and the stream information looks very different than what I was seeing when indoors.

So, thanks for listening and the help.

Lets hope I've got it now!?

good-oh,Kojiro! ...and, yes , you can have a "data stream" and no fix! just keep in mind that Windows is not your friend when it comes to Port#'s and you'll be fine!

Re: GPS Receiver BU-353

I'm having issues with the GPS causing my Windows 7 to blue screen.
I've updated the driver. I've also done some changes to the driver (setting it to Hardware and the FIFO to 1). But, I'm still getting the blue screens and Windows Troubleshooter doesn't want to help.

Any ideas?

Did you update to the Windows 7 driver appropriate to your computer? If you have a 32-bit or a 64-bit machine, try http://www.usglobalsat.com/store/dow...river_v130.zip

Do you have the GPS data connected to a program?

I don't recommend making any changes to the driver.

I have installed this GPS on many computers running Windows XP, Vista and 7 without any problems.

Re: GPS Receiver BU-353

The GPS is connected to OpenCPN.
I'm running 64bit, the driver I have installed is the one you link to. An 'update driver' via contral panel etc. did the update.

I suggest you run the installation application for the driver separately, not from within the control panel.

I've done that numerous times (uninstalling in between) and it still Blue Screens.

It happens at random times as well. Sometimes it will work all day, without crashing. Other times it takes only a few minutes.

The other odd thing. If I play 'Hearts' while OpenCPN is running and the BU 353 is plugged in, the BU-353 will stop feeding data to OpenCPN until I unplug it and plug it back in again (turn it off and on again basically).

Can't work this one out at all.
