Re: GPS into VHF Radio from PC Running OpenCPN with USB Device ?

"Linux can do far more natively out of the box then window as its sees the com ports simply as devices. So it can listen to many devices and do with the data as you tell it too as you have experienced. The issue in a marine environment is if the putter is a talker it can fail on the hardware side and it takes quite a while to reset your system once your used to that setup. "

it has happened to me, and is tedious, so what happens in your Linux box if the GPS AND OCPN are active with a w/routes each other? this gets through to TCP 2947 and reaches the AP? I am not computerwise expert at hardware level but I dont like the perspective. Sailias comments/suggestions are sensible in this.
Just out of curiosity what does "wardriving software " means? sounds scary.

regards. alex

"wardriving software " has to do with people driving around looking for wifi hotspots so they can get free internet usage.

And it applies in the basic sense for folks on sailboats. Radio Shack used to sell a nice little piece of hardware that had pretty good range that would do the same. With some software and a good antenna, it is possible to locate wifi broadcasters using your putter and map their location all at the same time. The software is the easy part a good and simple antenna is also available so when comming into a new port area or region, you would turn on the putter and scan for wifi broadcasters. You can do it from anchor or while entering a harbour as its all automated in most systems.
