gps and other devices via network connections?

This thread is related to running OpenCpn in a chroot environment on android devices.

My sense is it would possibly be less problematic than getting OpenCpn to use the built-in gps on an android device or via a usb cable, to connect via a wireless or bluetooth enabled gps using /dev/ttyS0 through S3, Network LIBGPS and or Network GPSD. Anybody with any experience/suggestions out there?

Re: gps and other devices via network connections?

I still feel it would be more reliable to use the available NMEA data from the tablet´s own GPS and port it to your installed OpenCPN prog. After all, there´s dozens of apps using the local GPS data.

There is a free utility which ´creates´ apps,or rather copies EVERY typed sequence and from this produces an automatic app. Perhaps this could be used?

The trick is to be able to catch the NMEA datastream and feed it to OpenCPN´s data port.

You could try catching the NMEA datastream produced by the FREE ´GPS Data Monitor´app which will also store the captured data in a file for later testing. You can download it as an .APK file.

Not sure it would be any easier to capture and feed the NMEA data using a bluetooth GPS device. You would also then occupy the only USB port on the tab which needs a USB ´dongle´inserted.

See attached screenshot of the datastream collected and saved.

Re: gps and other devices via network connections?

Tore,

Thanks for your suggestions. The server in linux is gpsd, and can be configured to connect to a user defined address such as localhost:someport. The problem using the built in gps is that there is no such address associated with it. It may be possible to connect to an external gps via usb, wireless or bluetooth and by using shareGPS from the market define ports so opencpn will receive data. Considering the options offered by opencpn for connectivity, tty, usb, libgps network and another network option that escapes me at the moment - there isn't much room for deviation.

Your input is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,
armido
