GPS, AIS and autopilot on same port?

OK, so in the manual it says:
Autopilot Output Port: Connect any NMEA 0183 compatible autopilot. Select the correct serial port from the list. OpenCPN does accept autopilot output on the main GPS input port, using the same baud rate, unless it is set to "AIS Port (Shared)".

Hmm... unfortunately I have a complete 0183 network through two multiplexers and it all funnels into the computer via a USB cable from the second multiplexer. I was hoping to have just that one connection to the computer; with wind, water, compass, GPS and AIS data coming to the computer and Autopilot data coming from the computer.

Is there a compelling reason why the code cannot have the same port specified for AIS, GPS and Autopilot? Is it a matter of the AIS coming in at 38,400 baud and the autopilot needing the data going out to be at 4800?

Place your bets on the next 3.1 beta version, which will feature rewritten serial port communications (currently in alpha testing), and should be able to handle your situation.
