google earth plug in - not following ocpn window

I'm seeing with the GE plug in, that the center point (boat location) isn't centered in the GE window unless you make the GE window fully half-screen width.

Just doesn't seem to recognize the same boat point or center point that the ocpn window is showing.

so probably it's a case of what am i doing wrong?

thanks!

Re: Google Earth Plugin

BluegillBoy...
This may be normal - there's no way to tell GE which scale we want to see and have to calculate height of camera above the surface to show more or less the same area as on the chart - this gets less and less good with the increasing disproportion of the shapes of the two viewports. The positioning gets much worse if GE is not set to hide the sidebar and toolbar before using the plugin as described in https://raw.github.com/nohal/gecomap...ter/README.txt
If you have done it and still think it's more off than one would expect, please post a screenshot and your GE plugin settings...

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Bluegill Boy, Your system doesn't behave like mine. As I increase the size of the GE window the apparent viewing altitude decreases. If the GE screen is about 1/2 the size of the O screen then the features are about 1/2 the size. When I expand the GE screen to its max the features are about equal size. I'm running GE v6.2.2 opengl and XP.

Unless you are manually zooming the GE screen, your system is behaving strangely. The first GE screen is zoomed in way too far; the second GE screen zoomed out instead of in, the third screen zoomed out, as it should, but the features are larger than in the O screen.

I'm wondering if there is some GE setting affecting this behavour. Which Vers of GE?

Re: Google Earth Plugin

I've been playing with the GE plugin. There are two situations that I found useful.

1. Size OpenCPN to take up half of the screen and size GE plugin to take up the other half. Check "Connect to chart viewport", and select Auto follow in OpenCPN. You get both screens at the same scale with the boat in the middle of each.

2. Uncheck "connect to chart viewport" and zoom in the GE plugin screen. This allows you to see the overall situation in the OpenCPN screen and the detail in the GE screen. You will have to manually position the GE screen. This is useful where charts lack detail are or are inaccurate.

You can also run GE independently of OpenCPN but this is more complicated in that you have to run a GPS splitter or 2 GPS's.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

I think I'm missing something with the GE plugin with OpenCPN. Is the internet required? If so can't be used offshore unless with internet connectivity of somekind. Correct?

Sort of correct, internet is required to get the google earth data but if you know where you are going you can cache that data on the computer hard drive.
Using Google Earth Offline - Google Earth Blog

Not very interesting offshore but very useful for anchorages, see where the other boats tend to be, look for possible trekking routes etc. Well worth looking into.

Good advice from conachair.

I have a page about creating GE caches here.

And for those areas that you want to create a chart using GE that has transparency and correction I suggest using the GE2KAP program as I describe at Create KAP

Re: Google Earth Plugin

hefestus...
To be honest I have no idea. There's no technical reason why it shouldn't I can see... But if you say it does not, it probably does not. I have no W8 machine to test and so also don't plan to fix it soon, sorry.

Make sure you are running CPN as admin by right clicking the icon when you run it and selecting "Run as Administrator".

Hope this helps!

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Guys...
Can someone explain me WHY does one have to run as an Administrator on this new miracle from Redmond to be able to use two normal userspace applications? Is it really necessary or would some setting in user account policy (or how do they call it with this particular version) do?

Wondering

Pavel
