Re: Google Earth Plugin

Hi all
I don't know if it's the right place to post ... anyway
I try to use GE2KAP to produce transparent chart for opencpn
Unfortunately I get an error and the process stops
I use Vista , GE 6.1 , GE2KAP 8.09 , ooRexx 4.1 and opencpn 2.5
I set GE as requested
Every things OK until the transparency selection window is shown.
After that , once the transparency is set , GE2KAP try to access to the 16th position in the "Edit" menu in French "Afficher le profil d'élévation" in English something like "Display elevation profile" , but this part of the menu is de-activated so I get an error and the process stops .
You can see in the shots attached :
kap1 : GE2KAP try to access to a no active menu
kap2 : The error I get
In the log : the sequence leading to the access and the end of the process

Thanks
JP

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Anyway, I think I see the problem. GE 6.1 has added a new selection in the edit dropdown to be able to sort the Place Marks "Trier de A a Z". I will see if I can fix that in my next version of GE2KAP.

Ptizef,

Recreate that problem and send the GE2KAP.log for that problem to

phiggins()gmn-usa.com (replace the () with an @).

The log is in the same directory as GE2KAP.rex and may look like a text file.

Use Google Earth Plugin in offline mode

I have revised How to download my saved Google Earth Caches within Using Google Earth for Navigation

Added are OpenCPN waypoints showing within each country where GE caches are available.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

I'm not sure if this has been done before Here is the Google Earty Plugin displaying live AIS vessel positions as well as the positions showing in OpenCPN The vessel can be queried in GE Plug and OpenCPN

The setup is:

Modified VHF feeding audio to AISMon
AISMon feeding NMEA to AISdecoder
AISdecoder feeding kmz with a network link

The trick is to set up GE to receive and display the AIS targets.
Close GE, saving settings if prompted
Start OpenCPN
Start GE Plugin
GE starts with the saved settings and continues to display and update AIS targets
Remember this is live data not an internet feed.

regards

Richard

Richard,

Very neat. But can you elaborate on:

"feeding kmz with a network link" To where?

What settings in GE?

What are your settings in the GE plugin for 'Preferences'?

I have OpenCPN configured to receive 38400 AIS data on a com port and the GPS to use AIS Port (Shared). What's yours?

Thanks, Terry

Re: Google Earth Plugin

AIS decoder writes a kmz file in its output folder
In GE you add a network link to My places which points to the kmz file You set the refresh rate to 30 secs
You can use any settings you like for the GE Plugin
Whats important though is get GE doing what you want befores lauching the GE PLugin (you can even preload routes)
Close GE and then launch the plugin

You if you have a dedicated ais unit you can split the output to 2 com ports using Franson Gate, One to Opencpn which you set up in the normal way. The other com port feeds AIS decoder. You can download from

Ais Decoder Downloads

Its a bit of a pain to setup But if you look in its help file is tells you about an ini file that is presetup to output GE kmz

The VHF modifications are outlined in a book which i cannot promote as I am a commercial member

regards

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Probably a dumb question; however, with ge plugin and OpenCPN off-line (no GPS feed) should the ge window show own-boat position dropped onto the corresponding OpenCPN chart window.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

John...
No, it's not - the core sends the position fix info to the plugins just if it comes from the GPS, the "Move boat here..." clicks are not "visible" to the plugin.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Here's another AIS combination, using OCPN and browser.

The OCPN screen has a direct fed fro Siitech,Vancouver, and the other a special setup with Marinetraffick.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

I'm probably dummer than a 2 dollar bill but I can't seem to find how to simply install the GE plugin into my open CPN program. I'm running Win 7 with latest GE and Open CPN 2.5. I've downloaded but not yet installed all the programs to make Google caches, routes etc. but can't seem to get my OpenCPN to list the GE plugin to enable it. therefore no GE logo in my OpenCPN. The GE plugin will list in the plugin folder for OpenCPN (C, programs86, OpenCPN, plugins) but when I go to enable it, it won't list in the plugin list in the "tools" for OpenCPN. I'm in the Galapagos heading for Marquesas in 2 weeks and really excited to get GE working in my OpenCPN BUT having this glich is really frustrating as the internet here is so slow and difficult to make any quick progress. Could someone give me step by step instructions please???
