Re: Google Earth Plugin

Terry,
just out of curiosity, may I ask how? Just had a look at Bungee 6.2 and it seems not to contain any facilities to organize windows on the screen. I can't even imagine how it can dock google earth inside opencpn window, resizing the chart canvas...

It can do that and quite nicely. It also allows you to adjust the altitude of the image, the tilt, and 'course up' mode

See samples below. (third image is with course up and tilt)

Plus, it gives you full control of the GE window. Uncheck everything under 'View' to give the best control of the window.

Hi Michel,

I doubt that 'crossed eyes' is a problem unless you are born with them.

The interest I have regarding using GE as a complement to other navigation programs is that in my part of the world, SE Asia, the available charting leaves a lot to be desired. Both raster and vector charts in this area, especially remote parts of the Philippines, are either inaccurate or lack detail or both. GE often gives good imagery of the reefs and channels that aren't shown on the charts. And the boat position on GE is often correct whereas the charts are not (many having been digitized from paper charts using the wrong datum).

If you go to this link and read The Bottom Line you will see what I have been writing about for the past seven months and some of my rationale.

However, as you will see, I am not a big fan of the GE plugin for OpenCPN ... yet. Perhaps when the bugs are worked out it will be OK. Meanwhile I am using the Bungee program instead.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Hi Terry
Merci et bravo…

I could see and understand your text on your site. As you I have a problem of reliability of the charts in Turkey.
So .... GE2KAP the process is perfect. Making the cards overlaied with GE/CM93, is easy and perfect. It's no longer manufacture these cards, which store caches Google Earth ... And then ... it's fun to prepare for the cruise ...
So I think the GE plugin is handy to make images ... arrived in the marina! Less to navigate !!!

cordially
Michel

NB: Of course, sorry for my poor english… but, I try !!!

Re: Google Earth Plugin

Hi Terry,
Have you heard of GoogleMV? It uses Google Maps.
With it you can easily make a local .jpg file from a certain area. You can specify the detail level and the coordinates of the area. So without seeing al the details in Google Maps you end up with a jpg file that is easily converted to a .kap file with img2kap. I use it a couple of years now and find it easy. Maybe its worth a try even if the download site is in russian or rumenian. gps

Re: Google Earth Plugin

There is a capability in GE to used Historical Imagery. At times this imagery is better than what is currently displayed. Why? Who knows?

Anyhow, as it now stands there are no controls available on GE when the GE plugin is used.

See the attached. The GE/KAP chart was made using historical imagery with the ChartAid program (ver 2.28).

The GE window (from the GE plugin) show the current imagery which is of lesser quality than the previous imagery.

Also, there is considerable difference in the resolution between the GE plugin and the OpenCPN display, whether a .kap chart or cm93.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

GE2KAP.V8.0.0 is now available that fixes the black screen problem that some users had with the OpenCPN plugin.

You can download it at: www.gdayii.ca ...Downloads ...GE2KAP

I second Valhalla's motion to request a historical image option in the plugin (hoping it's technically feasible)

Re: Google Earth Plugin

We may be a bit off topic here with GE2KAP but ...

I've just posted How to correct raster charts using GE2KAP program

Many thanks to Paul Higgins for another quality program

Re: Google Earth Plugin

I have ge2kap 8.0.1 and GE 6.1.0.5001 which has an extra menu option under edit (Sort A-Z) which causes the create overlay to fail (it steps down 16, needs to be 17?).
By pressing down while it is auto stepping I am able to proceed further but still fail to produce the .KAP
crash
syntax error at line 2396
latlong2 +=90
Bad arithmetic conversion

I was going to attach the .log and .kap files but the 1kb limit prevents me1

any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Google Earth Plugin

doggo,

You probably have Google earth position set to Degrees, minutes, Seconds. Try Degrees, Decimal minutes.

I will soon release a new version of GE2KAp that allows you to specify any of the forrmats except UTM.

Not sure what you mean by that. Can you provide some screenshots. You can send them to me at phiggins()gmn-usa.com (replace the () with an @).
