GoodAnchorage.com Plugin – Alpha Release

Hi all,

We took a stab at creating our own plugin for OpenCPN.
For those who don’t know, GoodAnchorage crowdsources anchorages around the world.

Our code is on Github under goodanchorage / goodanchorage_pi

(Sorry, can't post a full URL due to forum's restrictions)

There are a few outstanding issues before the plugin is ready for public release. Nevertheless, we figured perfect is the enemy of good. Meanwhile, those who can brave a few bugs may enjoy access to GA’s collected data.

Best regards,
Capt. Dietmar

Re: GoodAnchorage.com Plugin – Alpha Release

I clone (lots of compiler warnings) and enable get message box:

Error opening local data store.
GoodAnchorage plugin will run in ONLINE mode only

Hit ok, get message box:

Error creating authentication file.
GoodAnchorage plugin will not run properly.

Crowd anything???

Hmm, maybe not an anchorage I'd wanna "populate"?

Maybe a local bar, but...

Oh, wait, of course: all I wanna do is find a crowded anchorage.

Re: GoodAnchorage.com Plugin – Alpha Release

Thanks Stu.
Excited to have your post.

May I ask a few clarifying questions - please ?

Do you use openCpn for navigation or for route planning ?

On a scale of 1 - 10
How integrated are your vessel's systems to openCPN ?

0 = reference 10 = full autopilot & routing waypoint turn control

What type of sailing / exploring do you do ?
( racing / cruising / commercial / coastal / cruising/ open ocean / ocean crossing / circumnavigating )

Why do you use openCPN ?

This helps in understanding your very specific needs and hopefully meet those needs.

GA's mission is one of global information sharing for mariners by mariners.
So - if solitary and secluded anchorages are of importance to you - check out this one - accessible via the GA plugin on openCPN -> New Island | Good Anchorage

or if you want to find a quintessential south pacific cruisers bar here is a good one

Musket Cove | Good Anchorage

warm regards from 17 46.354 S 177 22.961 E @ 12 feet in mud & silt

How many of such programs are needed?
GoodAnchorage, Squidd.io, ActiveCaptain, some more?

boat_alexandra,

Didn't get a chance to work on Linux version until your message. The build should look better now. I fixed compiler warnings, and took care of the bug related to local storage and auth file.

Give it a try now. Thank you!

Gilletarom,

Forum's restrictions don't allow me to upload DLL files or post a direct link. You can locate an executable installer from our Github repository (/goodanchorage/goodanchorage_pi).

Alternatively, you or others should feel free to send a message through our website and I'll email you the link to installer or DLLs.

Thank you.

Have you tryed to change name of file by adding an other extension. By example xxxx.dll.doc ?

I thing that this is possible.

Best regards. Gilletarom.

Re: GoodAnchorage.com Plugin – Alpha Release

As I recall, there was a post a while back by a guy recommending some kind of crowd sourced anchorage program. He thought it was great and highly recommended it. Turned out that he was the founder or something and then, as I recall, he tried to disavow any prior attempt to deceive, even though by that point his prior efforts were well documented and obvious to all. Is this that product? If not, I will give it a try.

Took a look at your website and cannot find a way to check it out without becoming a member. I know its free, but a way to see what is in there would be nice. You would probably end up with more members.

Hi folks,

An entry into Tracker/Flyspray has been created for this new plugin.

Hello CarCode - Good question ! From a maritime safety perspective - not enough . Most goverments around the world have reduced not increased near shore surveys and their survey vessels - 40- 50 % of of world wide charts are not WGS84 - only 5% of the Pacific is accurately charted ( in <100m near shore ) - Bahamas - 1% - the IHO has some very scary stats depending on your flavor of risk - so if you head outside well charted waters - relying on those who go before you becomes important - so this is a process by which we aim to provide accurate anchorage data - for free.

Re: GoodAnchorage.com Plugin – Alpha Release

Dietmar,

Have compiled for Windows and uploaded to

OpenCPN Beta File Thingie rguser rgpass

Look in 4.0 PI Win folder for
goodanchorage_pi-0.2-ov-4-0-win32

I have tried this plugin out, I runs, I was able to enter my login, however the tags for anchorages do not show up, yet I am well connected to the interneet.
For example, the Anchorage in Tarpaulin Cove next to Naushon Island, Cape Cod, MA does not show up. Nor does the new anchorage tag made at Napatree Point, Watch Hill, Westerly, RI after registering.

Have tried clicking on the Anchor icon and right click to see if there is a command such as there is for Squiddio, but there is none. What am I doing wrong?
