Georeferenced JPEG maps

The web page of he Norwegian costal administration has a web page where you can make georeferenced JPEG of nautial charts, and also add layes on demand.

LINK: Kystinfo

Also link to example georefeenced JPEGs made from the webpage ( Tønsberg, Norway)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wme9ppzn41...4f9df.zip?dl=0

Link 2: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xbrolu91mt...7ab39.zip?dl=0

This could be very useful for making your own maps

Well, if you include fjords and islands, it covers 22.000 kilometer coastline in addition to ocean areas.
But of course the reason for US to release all ENC and RNC for free is due to safety concerns, if the Norwegian maritime authorities was even a little bit concerned about security, they would have done just the same thing.

Rolls&Royce was one of the last car manufacturers to introduce brakes on the front wheels and their prime argument for not doing so was that "If Rolls&Royce cars has brakes on the front wheels, they will stop so fast that it will be dangerous due to the risk of being hit from behind by other cars"

Almost the same argumentation used by the Norwegian coastal administration to protect them selves.

Re: Georeferenced JPEG maps

Is there any skilled programmer on this forum that can make a small tool to automatically produce KAP files of the zip files downloaded form this web page ??

Each zip file contains 3 files:

Projection_info_.txt
Code:
Projection name: EPSG:32633
Projection definition: +proj=utm +zone=33 +ellps=WGS84 +datum=WGS84 +units=m +no_defs
printout.jgw

Code:
1.25
0
0
-1.25
69131.408180357
6999090.521801
printout.jpg

The image of the selected area in jpg format. Example zip files can be downloaded from the link in the first post in this thread.

All the georeference information is already present in the files provided so imgkap involves a lot of not required manual input / operations.

Could the process be automated since all required information is already present, that wold be a great advantage.

If you was able to give the path to a directory containing several zip files, and had a program that could process all zip files in that directory producing KAP files, it would be a very efficient way to make maps for a large area.
Donations to opencpn waiting,,, :-)

Re: Georeferenced JPEG maps

MAPC2MAPC will translate the georef jpg once the files are extracted from the zip.

EPSG32633 WGS_1984_UTM_ZONE_33N to Mercator is the option I used but it seems to work.

Intend asking John Thorn if it is possible to make MAPC2MAPC read the contents of a zip file.

Re: Georeferenced JPEG maps

Hi Guys,

I doesn't look difficult to process a ZIP file in one step - nor to make it part of the Batch processing to do several in one go.

If there is enough interest, I will add it to the standard MAPC2MAPC product.

So post here if you would like me to do it!

Re: Georeferenced JPEG maps

Hi Guys (and gals),

Would someone like to try this, please?

http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/net/mapc2mapc563a.zip

cando

It's not in the help files, yet but it will open one of the Kistinfo zip files and write a BSB/KAP file (and a lot else besides). You will get red X's until you register (sorry, I have to eke out my pension) and there may be variants on the data that I have not seen - and so not programmed yet. This is just a 32bit version to test when completed there will be a 64bit version, too.

Don't try it in batch mode, yet!
