Garmin USB on Windows - win7

I have opencpn running on fedora fc14 x86_64 compiled from sourcemy gps is a garmin oregon 400c and gpsd works ok.


I downloaded the exe from sourceforge (32 bit) and installed it
on win7 64 bit. I am currently using fugawai which uses the
garmin usb drivers (I think) I also have garmin mapsource.


I assume that opencpn does not support the garmin usb drivers
and that I will be getting a serial to usb converter.
Just want to be sure in case I have not configured something
correctly. Also would gpsgate software be a work around
instead of the serial to usb cable?

I have used the Garmin USB drivers (without USB to serial converter) on XP, Vista and Win7 Starter (a tiny Samsung, not sure what version of Win7 it was).

It might be, that the GPS should be switched on and recognized by the operating system before OpenCPN is started for the first time. Otherwise GARMIN will not be a selectable option in the Tools/GPS dialog.

Have garmin hand held with 7,gps works,chart problems.Love win 7 so much next computer will be a mac.marc ps mine with serial/usb uses com 7 or 8 not garmin.
