Re: Garmin GPSMAP 292 and OpenCPN connection problems

What I would like is if Garmin and the rest could cooperate a bit. Garmins,Magellans and TomToms the one thing they share is "Wanting-To-Be-By-Themselves"and synching across "racial" lines is not encouraged without a software as umpire in the middle. I'm impressed O takes this on, beyond standard open protocols. But it gets to be like a rowboat that needs ten sizes of oarlocks and of course, next year's are going to be "up-dated"....
If it can't be synched to O as per the general run of Garmin that O does work with, then it seems like a plugin that caters to it (and some of its eclectic brethren) would be the way to go for all this "garminella".
Totally agree with your statement, this world would be a better place if we all agreed to the same standards

And there is a nice little contradiction in the OpenCPN as the software takes on the challenge to interpret the Garmin protocol that is the opposite

Regardless it would be very useful (my opinion) if the O project shared what Garmin specs the Garmin interface is implemented to support, in that way we would know if this is a bug or if we indeed need another plugin to cope.

I think but do not know that the protocols supported my my device are the same as the ones used by newer devices, this is based on the simple fact that all other software I have tested works at the first try

Pretty impractical, but just reversing it, maybe OpenCPN should have an open standard protocol that the hardware manf. code to.

Alternatively, even more difficult and impractical, perhaps someone could make a plugin that would allow the user to easily adjust the open standard protocol to their hardware device.

Agreed, but I have read that Garmin has their proprietary things to avoid using the GPS together with e.g. OpenCPN on a computer. The only things they endorse is use their software i.e. Mapsource and the purchase a second copy of their low priced charts/maps for use on the computer since the ones you just bought for your GPS is not allowed to use on the laptop...

My guess is they are in it for the money not for user support or user friendliness. My personal opinion is that you can combine the above.

So this thread just took another turn, bu at the risk of nagging, still interested in what the GRMN mode in O was implemented to support

Unfortunately Garmin does not want you to be able to upload anything from your computer to their units directly. Does your Garmin unit have provision for an SD card?
If so, there is an easy way to do this.

If you have Sd capacity I can explain how to do it.

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 292 and OpenCPN connection problems

Thanks Drummer Buoy.

Yes I have realized that Garmin are not keen on uploads.
Unfortunately our unit has a Garmin datacard i.e. not a regular SD.
And we do not have a USB adapter for the card, or an empty card...

And btw, upload is quite possible using GRMN mode but not via O.

Re: Garmin GPSMAP 292 and OpenCPN connection problems

When you say "data Card" what size is it?

If you do your waypoints in Open CPN---export(save) them as .GPX files.

Then download and install Garmin's Home Port--software----

Open Home Port, "import" the .gpx file into Home Port. Then save IT as Garmin .gdb-----that gets you close.

Garmon uses .GDB BUT the Gps units themselves use .ADM(Garmin Proprietary)

IF you had SD capability you could transfer the .GDB files to the card and then install them into the Garmin Unit. The Garmin will convert the .GDB to .ADM.

But with your unit I am not certain. It sounds like an older one.

If yu shoulc choose to replace your Gps consider the Garmin 500 series that uses SD Cards. You can do what you want easily.

Sorry I could not be of more help.
