Free OpenCPN Android Download Available Now.

Hi I am happy for the immediate future to try and organize a free copy of the Android OpenCPN Open Source version.

The version I intend to release will be a full Open Source Android version with NO Google Play Store fees or Charges included in the source code.

I have managed to send one copy via www.wetransfer.com to a end user.

Can every one try this address for opencpn_android_4.1.915.apk

https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads...8023402/73be6e

If this does not work the easiest way to get the free Open source version out to every one could be a Torrent file.

Dear Yachtforfun
Where is your respect and appreciation? I believe this will eventually become a dead end.

Everyone should be aware that the forums administrators have removed the daily thread for - OpenCPN for Android V1.0 Production Release despite the fact that queries and answers have been posted on it today

I am of the opinion that the number of adverse comments about the comercialisation of OPCN have necessitated this move in the hope that it will stop the posts.

It says a great deal about the openness of this forum and the right to
freedom of speech and the ability to voice and register opinions.

CENSORSHIP is alive and well on this forum.

Re: Free OpenCPN Android Download Available Now.

yes, this forum is always full of censorship it's pretty annoying.

I cannot post the name of the customs official in new zealand who confiscated my boat because he didn't like the look of it, and in effect delayed me by 6 days which forced me to sail in 50 knot winds instead of 30 knots. I only wanted to warn other people about him so they could be sure to leave without clearance as I should have done.

After all there are terms and conditions to the forums and I think the one to know is that if you disagree with the moderator then they will delete your post, or in my case they will edit it to change some of the words.

I fully support opencpn in a google store. Anyone may build it from source and so it is just as free as it ever was.

Forum administrators seldom act by themselves but have to act by law when someone ask for it. Knowing this background you may imagine who have asked what...

The thread OpenCPN for Android V1.0 Production Release was moved to the commercial forum as the OP was selling OpenCPN for Android for profit.

It's a day later.

Do you still think this is a good Idea ?

If not, I'm sure the thread could be removed if you were to ask.

Cheers,
JM.

It already has become a dead end.

3 Days ago I asked Dave to Explain where the Android OpenCPN Google Play version, money was going.

Its the same version created by volunteers over lots of years.

The silence is deafening!

Have you any ideas what the plan is?

I believe OpenCPN has to be free and open "Open source" project for now and forever.

First of all, I'm a big fan of opensource sortware like Opencpn. On the other hand also people who use a lot of their private or working time on opensource projects will have to make an income. The theory behind opensource is to share and contribute, but there is absolutely not an hider in at the same time to selling or earning money on the same software. I will refer to the GNU project's page about selling free sotware:
Actually, we encourage people who redistribute free software to charge as much as they wish or can. If a license does not permit users to make copies and sell them, it is a nonfree license. If this seems surprising to you, please read on.

Except from readers of this forum who mostly has the skills and knowledge to install opencpn them self from downloads in this forum or compile themself, the average user will newer understand how to install opencpn. On the other side, today most people understand how to install from goggle play. This way all people have the possibility to install and enjoy opencpn evewn if they must pay a small amoutn. This is in a win win situation for all parties.

I don't have a problem with the selling of Open Source GPL2 Code. As as you state I can sell a copy of any GPLV2 Compiled Code for what ever I like, a million dollars or free on the Google Play store.

But selling is not what I am getting upset about,

Nohal / Pavel removed the last freely downloadable beta version of Android OpenCPN from the OpenCPN.org website.

Dave at around the same time released his production version on Google Play store for $9.99.

When I checked the source code I discovered Dave has added a wrapper that goes around the GPLV2 Source Code and adds a Google license to the outside that checks whether the code has been paid for and if not it sends your android device to the play store.

YES this is Open Source GPLv2 code sending you to Google to pay money.

So I checked the code and If you compile the code for OpenCPN on Github it will compile a OpenCPN for Android but it will not run. It will tell you your open source GPLv2 OpenCPN is not licensed to run!

+import com.google.android.vending.licensing.LicenseChecke r;

td p { margin-bottom: 0cm; }p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; } } else {
// Otherwise, the user is not licensed to use this app.
// Your response should always inform the user that the application
// is not licensed, but your behavior at that point can vary. You might
// provide the user a limited access version of your app or you can
// take them to Google Play to purchase the app.
mLicenseHandler.post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
Log.i("OpenCPN", "License: dontAllow(), NOT LICENSED");public void run() {

I would be totally delighted to be proven wrong here but.. this is not the spirit . Nor is this allowed in the GPLv2 License. The user , any user is always allowed to use a GPLv2 licensed code. They do not need to get permission off Google.

So basically if you take the OpenCPN GPLv2 open source code base for Android to A small island and get all the kids to compile it they will not be able to make it work unless thy pay $9.95 to Google.

I don't know about you but this is not what I got into OpenCPN community for. OpenCPN has to be Free and Open and share and Share alike. Built by volunteer boaters. Money will destroy OpenCPN.

Ok, din't know that. I support the possibility to get paid for your work while doing gpl code, but you should also repect the GPL.

Re: Free OpenCPN Android Download Available Now.

This is not violating the GPLv2 license in any way, of course. Don't like the behaviour? Change it, build, you have a version without it.
