Thanks for the Mega drive location so all OpenCPN community users can share in the Open Source version of Android OpenCPN.

That would be true if the source code had not been modified in any way. Please correct me if I'm wrong,but I believe that the "free" version on Play Store was modified and had some code removed (the play store check).

If so, you are required to have the modified source code distributed somewhere.

P.S. This is a dangerous game you are playing. As I alluded to in another post, there is nothing stopping the main developers from simply ceasing work on this project. It has happened with many other Open Source projects in the past. I highly doubt skilled resources will be found to replace them if they do that! Then we all end up with and unsupported product that becomes stagnant. After a few years, its garbage as vital features are not added. All because a few didn't want to pay a $10 support and distribution fee. Crazy and selfish!

Thanks for clarifying, Dave. The simplest strategy is indeed to buy one copy from Dave and then ask for the source for every new release.

It wasn't modified and your believes are wrong.

Future releases might need some small patches to the source. Not sure if it's worth branching the git repository for that, but I'm happy to discuss possibilities with everyone who's interested to work on this. Simply PM me.

An open source project usually consists of the effort of many people: Third party projects, contributed patches and translations, effort by the beta testers, etc. I doubt that all of them are happy that a single person is making money from their contributions - or that they would have made these contributions for a commercial product.

If a single contributor feels that they need to monetize on their effort, they have a couple of possibilities:
  • ask for a distribution fee
  • offer a support subscription for those who want or need it
  • ask for donations
  • find a project sponsor that pays them

Even if it means duplicated efforts and resources, Dave decided to ask a fee for his distribution and to encourage someone else to build and publish the free version. Fair enough, I thought, and paid the $25 registration fee for the play store registration.

Ask Dave for the source and then do a binary comparison with his build.

If you have the skills to detect malware and keyloggers, I would suggest that you go to https://github.com/OpenCPN/OpenCPN and build your own version from scratch. If you find anything, please let us all know, and get in touch so we can bundle our efforts.

But really, I think you just want to be complicated. *IF* you had the skills for that, you would understand the Android permission system. Yens Out.

As you know, what *you* distribute is full of *my* GPLv2 licensed code and I'm not happy that you refuse to stick with my license and provide the source when the users of your product ask for it.
I believe that unlike some other revolutionaries on this thread you at least know what you are distributing and would be able to build it from source, so please do so and stick with the license for my work or remove my code from it.
Have to say it is a bit humorous to see Dave's "commercial" distribution to stick with my license, while all you "freedom fighters" not just not doing so, but actively refusing to
