The ideal would be have a database with all of the locations of places in the world. I got one the other day in .txt format. It was only (ha, ha) 136 meg in size which is just too large for even a simple text editor to open.
Looking it up in the Sailing Direction is pretty fast. Who needs time savings when cruising? A search feature in the charts would be nice except most built in search algorithms ( like those in Windows) are pathetic compared to Google. Also the vector charts have a huge number of misspelled place names.

Nice PDF versions of all the US Sailing Directions seem to be readily available among the cruisers. They must be downloadable from some government site. Or the paper copies from the usual chart sources.

Re: Find a place by name....quickly?

A good data source of location names and their geo locs and more can be downloaded for free here: GeoNames

Setting up a database in the free OpenOffice should not be too difficult.

The file covering the World is 200 MB so I suggest the downloded files are done by countries or areas.

Anybody feel up to the task?

Tore

per Evil...
startpage.com (=ixquick in Europe..) is an option ..it uses google as a search engine and even has a proxy to use too for looking at risky sites

Re: Find a place by name....quickly?

Iīve downloaded a spreadsheet database of the US and dependencies which is quite useful as a POI link. Having found the location and itīs geo loc, just copy the lat-lon to the īJump to positionīfeature in OCPN,thatīs it!

I wish I had the know-how to create a database formula in which to load large, text based, comma delimited world database I have downloaded. (200 MB)

For all on-line searches, the link described in my earlier #2 entry is the quickest.

Re: Find a place by name....quickly?

The US txt placename/geo loc file is very large and I was thinking itīs possible to split it into several files and set up a way to search the files with ctrl-F and a name parameter using a batch file.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Actually the files displays better in Notepad than in a spreadsheet.

Tore

Note. I have split the US file up into 16 files of 17 MB.
