Overzoom and too wide track

Two screenshots while swinging at anchor, for the last hour or so.

Screenshot one: Opencpn, scaled in and zoomed in as far as possible, track active. => No way to tell how the boat is swinging at anchor

Screenshot two: Fugawi, same chart, same time frame, zoomed in way more. One can see how the boat swings. The red circle is an anchor alarm feature of Fugawi

Anchor Alarm

Follow up on the anchor alarm idea:

Precondition: This will only work, after significant overzoom is allowed and the track is thin enough to show the boat swinging at anchor.

The anchor should be a waypoint, probably called "Anchor"

The user should be able to set and move that waypoint by mouse, maybe arrow keys for fine tuning

The anchor alarm configuration should allow for setting a max radius (we don't manage (yet?) the own ship geometry, so this is the radius from the anchor to the gps antenna)

The display should show the anchor alarm circle so the user can adapt the center and radius to the swinging boat.

A sound file should be user selectable for the anchor alarm.

When the anchor alarm triggers, I would like opencpn to put the ship in the center, scale to a chart with max detail, because I am probably dragging and need all help I can get.

Fugawi has a "set" button to allow the user to set the anchor = gps position. This really is no good, when I am setting the anchor I don't have time to push this button in the Fugawi program. I usually wait until I see a part of a circle and guess the center of the circle. Then I have to tweak lat/lon for the waypoint, pretty crappy... We can do better!

Additional, nice to have feature:

For every 2nd tide change the track should change color or shade (less bright). This would allow us to see the new track on top of the old track (>=12h 25.2 min old = 1/2 lunar day). I had anchorages with the anchor properly resetting after a tide change, but the anchor slowly moved in one direction, over days.

Screenshot below shows me at anchor, just went through a tide swing.

- routes, to and from, possibly large selection of plotters,
- warning for routes plotted over dangers (checking all scales),
- AIS overlay and alarms,
- AIS crossing predictions,
- weather overlay,
- weather routening with polars and currents (incl. tidals),
- calibrated bmp overlay (=satellite, scans, fax, etc),
- instruments integration,
- absolute/tidal depths,
- auto position save to text and printer,
- auto hot coffee (at sea) & cold beer (in port), with manul override,

I know the last point is a 'nice have', but since the competition does not offer this one yet I thought it has some commercial merit.

Dave,

Here's my more immediate "would likes":

A smaller boat icon... please as soon as possible. The huge boat is really awkward in the close up scales.

Option to give more of a forward view of the chart so instead of centralizing on auto follow so we get a 2/3 screen look ahead would be very useful underway.

Thanks.

Chris

Separate AIS alarms for Class A and Class B targets

Dave

can we get separate alarm configurations for Class A and Class B targets? I am thinking of the 3 lines shown in the screenshot: Have them separate them for Class A and Cass B. Crossed Long Island Sound on a Sunday today, lots of sailing and motor yachts with Class B. I am really more interested in the tugs / ships. I also would like to have a different alarm sound for class B targets

Since this will probably get some opposition from owners of class B transponders: I am NOT proposing to ignore class B targets, but I would like to give them different alarm parameters and a different alarm sound

track and yellow large track

to complete jpebrig ( post #13), I export tracks in gpx and import in gpx.
1 / import track : none result
2 / the copy ans paste from gpx (other program) to navobj.xml of several lines of track (<trkseg ...........</trkseg>) product one yellow large track.

moreover... and one track test (opencpn) in the .... TGV product yellow large track.

one small track line of 0.005 Nm is better.

I am not playing with OpenCPN yet but hopefully will be in the not too distant future.
That aside, your request makes so much sense (to me). I have often thought while looking at different chart plotters/programs that this (at times) would make so much better use of a small screens space.

Good one for sure.

Also +1 from me. Here is how another nav program shows possible configurations for own ship position. On some courses one might want to fix the own ship in a corner.

Another vote/request for this in OpenCPN - it's a very useful feature.

+ ability to display a configurable 'zone' (say a circle) and 'bearing' around the yacht - would make visual control much easier in a couple of sailing / anchoring situations

Tides and Currents

As gpx or track icons, the current and tides icons should have an option for not showing.

Example : The mediterrannean sea (no current, no tides)

Max Chart Ahead

This option is usually available in other ENC programs and I find it very useful. However it should probably be combined with an option to choose chart orientation. For example if we are limited to, say, "north up" as the default, then the display often ends up with the vessel tucked in one or another corner of the screen, which to my eye is a bit off-putting. If however we can choose course or route leg up, then "max chart ahead" presents a much more natural display, one similar to the offset feature of most radar displays. In any case the "max chart ahead" is very useful underway and should be placed on the short list.
