Re: Feature Requests

sailias...
If you want the whole screen area for the chart, just uncheck the "Show toolbar in fullscreen mode" checkbox on the Etc. tab in the toolbox and switch to fullscreen mode (F11)

Overlay BSB on cm93 charts

I may be missing somethiing covered elsewhere but can't seem to find anything.

I have BSB charts (actually GE images converted to BSB/KAP) that I would like to overlay on the cm93 charts.

I can do that for other larger BSB charts but not for cm93.

Am I missing something or is this a feature that doesn't exist?

TIA, Terry

Your "problem" is related to how OpenCPN quilts different chart types.
Raster charts are quilted separately from vector charts. The exception is when you have CM93 loaded and there is no raster coverage, then CM93 kicks in.
In your picture you have a few raster charts loaded apart from the GE kap causing your problem.
To get OpenCPN to do what you want, put the GE kap in a directory where there is no other raster charts coverage of the area covered by the GE kap.
Then load this directory together with CM93, and once again don't load other raster charts covering the Ge kap area.
I'm not quite up to date with GE2KAP but I think there is a feature where you can overlay GE on CM93 and produce a kap. This could be an alternative.

Overlay Notice to Mariners, Navtext Security Messages

On paper charts it is very easy to update/annotate the chart with updates such as recently issued Notices to Mariners, or Navtex security messages.

It would be great to be able to perform the same on an electronic chart. (No idea what the IMO stds define for ECDIS re this safety problem).

Here are some recent Navtex security messages:

It would be great if I could enter in an area, or point, select the type of object/warning/colour code/pattern which is then overlayed on the displayed chart.

A nice to have would be if I can specify an expiry date and a garbage collection process deletes the entry.

At present I have to move the cursor to find out where the positions are located, and "mentally" picture what areas to avoid. (For example, I can't type in a Lat & Long and have the cursor move to that position)

This is what the new feature "Layers" are for. For now only available in the beta test releases, but 2.5 is not to far away.
But it will still be a bit of work to do this manually. An alternative is a script where the positions could be entered and an are automatically generated.
I think this is an area where we can see more development, once Pjotr has tested the present setup on his voyages.
See the wiki documentation on opencpn.org for more on this subject.

Re: Feature Requests

These things can be send via AIS System. I am including for you 2 files showing what is now done via AIS on the St-Lawrence. One is the soundings and the other the tide gauge updated every 15 minutes or so, depending on the system. It is being done in PHP.

Ref.: Automatic backup

Recently I sailed in heavy weather from San Francisco, CA to Pt. Angeles, WA and during this trip I used OpenCPN 2.3.1 and 2.4.6. I had several crashes probably triggered by a weak power supply/voltages changes due to using power winches under high load. The laptop did not quit but OpenCPN crashed and in some cases all was ok after a restart but in more than one case I lost my route changes and more important I lost all my tracks that I use for log purposes.

I would appreciate having an automatic backup of routes, tracks and waypoints. It should be adjustable how often and how many backups the system provides. I remember a very old version of NOBELTEC that provided 5 automatic backups.

I use OpenCPN since years now and congratulations to you guys, it is the system I like most.

I would like the ownship icon the change size according to zoom level. Its crazy to see your own boat get bigger than a tank ship at normal map zoom level. It can be a navigational issue to.

Claus...
this is implemented in the latest betas - there are rotating backups of navobejcts created on every program run.
In the INI file you can find a configuration setting to control the number of backups kept, defaulting to KeepNavobjBackups=5
The backups are then stored in files navobj.xml.[1..x] while .1 is always the newest backup and the oldest is removed on the next program run.
Interesting is that you lost your route changes as we save them immediately to a separate file and in case of a crash reconstruct on the next startup. Anyway, after a crash it's pretty wise to check the data before restarting the program, especially when filesystem corruption can be suspected.
For the log purposes, you can convert the logfile logbook entries to GPX tracks using a tool I wrote some time ago: https://github.com/nohal/LogBookExtractor/downloads

Re: Feature Requests

Is it possible to have an option in the route manager to show/hide individual routes, tracks, and waypoints? The workaround for importing/exporting .gpx files (or setting up layers in the beta version) is ok but not particularly user friendly. To me, this is the only drawback in OpenCPN, in all other areas it outperforms other software.

Owenr...
Have you tried clicking on the icon in the leftmost column of route manager (eye for routes/tracks, waypoint symbol for waypoints)? I would say it's what you are asking for...
