Drawing tools - virtual protractor - possibility of making chart annotations, with all of what is drawn or written available in selectable colors and line weight and in a separate layer (could be an extra "piano key") which we can turn on and off. Would be a real boom for professional navigators, and for those of us accustomed to careful, paper-based navigation.

Ever tried the plugin Ocpn Draw? https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/plugins/draw.html
I think all your requests are there except a real protractor. But if you just want to get an angle from a specific position try the EBL with the base point at the pointer instead of the boat.

Maybe I'm using it wrong, but I can only make it draw circles. There doesn't seem to be a manual. In any case, I'd like to be able to draw lines in a distinct color and in a separate layer; also annotations. A protractor would help a lot, too. Would be great for those of us skilled in paper chart work. Possible?

SAS planet is great, but the Kystinfo website have the possibility to overlay all sorts of ENC features like navigational installations, depth soundings, curves and so on. also, for most areas you will find much more detailed photos with a native resolution up to 1:625 see attached example from same area.

Doesn't the OpenCPN Draw plugin do this?

Combining features from the Draw-pi and the Watchdog-pi will do the trick.
Explained at the manual of the Draw-pi.

Yes use Ocpn_draw_pi to create a "Boundary" and see Watchdog_Alarms Boundary.

also see Watchdog_pi "Boundary Alarm" for how to set the Alarm.
