Re: Feature Requests - Enter OwnShip Position

Following on the threads of DR and loss of GPS:

I request development of the ability to:

Manually enter own ship position, as an option. This allows for continued use of OpenCPN as navigation tool when GPS position is unavailable. A connection fails, the GPS unit fails, other scenarios mentioned above... Our Vesper XB-8000 failed when piloting among the reefs of Tonga. Yikes.

Many other position sources are available when the ship’s GPS fails, or fails to connect to OpenCPN. On board Velic now are: Garmin 76, Garmin 72H, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and Olympus ToughShot4 Camera. All can provide a GPS position. Even celestial can provide. But how to get that into OpenCPN on the own ship?

A workaround is to create waypoint and position it by entering lat/lon. Then calculate course from that. But this does not take advantage of all the tools already available to the ship’s own position for navigation.

Furthermore, in much coastal piloting and ocean navigation a position once per hour or each noon is more than sufficient to at least get to port safely when (not if) inter-connected GPS fails.

Suggest you make your comments in Tracker AND VOTE for this item. This item should have made its way to the top of the "Vetted" feature request if you want to sure it will be considered by the developers.

Re: Feature Requests

OZ,

There is already a way to set the position of own ship. Have a look at the manual or experiment with the right mouse button when the cursor is on the chart. There is a context menu to move own ship to "here".

I like to see the boat moving on the screen with the input of my log or estimated speed and the heading plus or minus drift from the Imu.

When it is possible to make a fix of the position of the boat, it can be moved to that spot en moves on again with the DR info.

Simply DR but then on the plotter chart sets.

Bram..
For test purposes I made this tool. Can it suit you as well?

Hakan,

thanks for the reply. However I don't use Windows and cannot try your setup.

But in my view the proposal is to use a dynamic input like an cheap Imu unit.

I have not tried an Imu myself but it seems to work.

Can be connected to an OpenPlotter system. Perhaps there is more info about the use of an Imu on board of boat.

Regards,

Bram

Re: Feature Requests

There are two plugins that are useful for DR which should be considered in this discussion.

Ocpn_Draw 1.4 Has DR Features
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=opencpnpencpn_user_manual:toolbar_bu ttonslugins:navigationdraw1.4_pi#dead_reckonin g_dr

DR Plugin (beta)
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=opencpnpencpn_user_manual:toolbar_bu ttonslugins:navigation:dr_dead_reckoning&s[]=dr&s[]=plugin

I have added Hakan's and Verkerbr's comments to tracker.

I hope you will add your thoughts to the Tracker item FS#1584
https://opencpn.org/flyspray/index.p...s&task_id=1584
and to vote for it if you believe a DR mode is needed, while expressing clearly what you think is needed.

DR and Kalman Filter Alternative

For consideration with DR:

Attached PDF "Double Exponential Smoothing: An Alternative to Kalman Filter-Based Predictive Tracking" by Joseph J. LaViola Jr.
Brown University Technology Center for Advanced Scientic Computing and Visualization

"Algorithms for predictive tracking of user position and orientation based on double exponential
smoothing. These algorithms, when compared against Kalman and extended Kalman lter-based predictors with
derivative free measurement models, run approximately 135 times faster with equivalent prediction performance
and simpler implementations."

Re: Feature Requests

Have looked at the OpenCPN Command Line thinking maybe Opencpn had an always active command line where we could send the boat to specific location, but the command line appears to be a startup command line.

For DR mode and for the Celestial Navigation Plugin, I would like a Right-Click > Pick "Move boat lat/long".

The simplest way to do this now, that I know of, is to make a text file with the NMEA Position you'd like and then run it with VDR_pi. That is definitely a "long pole" solution. Enter the Lat & Long and Fix time into a GLL sentence and run it through a nmea 0183 checksum.exe checker...

$GPGLL,42.35,N,71.1,W,180000,A,*1A

Save this line to a text file CN-bos-test.txt then use VDRplayer with the file, to move the boat to a precise location.
Then add a new Command into Launcher_pi to execute VDRplayer with CN-bos-test.txt.

I am surprised this feature does not exist in Opencpn.

I suppose it could be my first plugin attempt. moveboat-pos_pi

Re: Feature Requests

Actually it should be this form for N 42.35 W-71.1

$GPGLL,4221.00,N,07106.00,W,180000,A,*18

Re: Feature Requests

I would find it easier to move the cursor near where I want the boat, then adjust it until the precise value is displayed on the status bar. Right click and select "move boat here".

Would work with the radar plug-ins and DR if it gets implemented.

Hmm.. as it is now, when you move the cursor its coordinates _are_ displayed in the bottom status bar. Getting very fine precision is just a matter of a zoom level adjustment (mouse wheel). Then right mouse button > move boat here. Presto, done.

Ah, I understood your post as requesting a feature, which I knew was already there. Apologies for misunderstanding..
