Re: Feature Requests

I have a feature request that I would be willing to pay someone to develop for me. I need a "watchdog" type alarm that measures distance covered in feet and sounds an alarm when a preset distance has been covered, then repeats until disabled. The preset would need to be adjustable
Anyone interested?

Very easy, buy e.g. this instrument and set the alarm. It can be changed to feet also.

Thats for depth not distance?

Correct, so buy a GPS Tracker e.g. MT90 GPS/GPRS Tracker for a distance alarm.

Re: Feature Requests

A key part of what I need is for the alarm output to sound off, then reset and repeat the cycle when the distance is covered again. That device doesn't do it unless I'm missing something

What exactly is that you are trying to do? Survey something for example? Record something at specific distances?

If you are on a route you could set waypoints the required distance apart and use the arrival alarm.

That is a little too cumbersome

Ok so here it is:
Set distance in feet.
Drive boat on heading (any)
When preset distance is reached, sound horn for 2 seconds
Reset and start counting again.
Repeat until turned off.

What don't you understand?

I understand the basic concept but your specification is lacking detail.

+ What frequency are you looking at?
+ What speed?
+ What distance between points?
+ Are you only interested in distance over ground or are you interested in distance from last object (not the same thing)?
+ What accuracy are you looking at? 1 foot? 10m 1/2 a mile?

Those things all have a bearing on the calculations and the interface.

Speed shouldn't matter since its distance based, but the boat will be moving at around 6 or 7 knots. Distance over ground..usual range will be about 350 - 400 feet. Accuracy to 1 foot would be fine

This is unrealistic using GPS, the accuracy will be at least 1 order of magnitude (= 10 times) worse most of the time. Worse if your GPS is 1 Hz as most of the standard commercial units are. See GPS.gov: GPS Accuracy if you want to know why.
Nice little project for someone who has time to do it.

I would be happy with whatever is realistic for accuracy.

As Nohal said for accuracy.

Speed matters because it affects update rates etc..

Is it you throwing the things overboard?

You'll have to be quick and accurate at 8 knots you'll be covering 100m (330 feet ish) in 23 seconds.

You could probably do this with a simple stop watch or kitchen timer and get accuracy as good as you will from GPS derived distance and manually throwing things. Over such small distances at least.

Are you interested in doing this or just finding reasons not to? The timer is the way we're doing it now. You mentioned 8 knots, we are not going that fast.
