Electronic tide chart data for Chile

We are headed for the Chilean canals and, while printed tide charts are available, I am not aware of any electronic tide chart data that could be used with OpenCPN. Am I not looking hard enough or does this not exist as yet?

Thanks.

As far as I can tell there's no free electronic tide data available west of Ushuaia.

And if you contact the Chilean Hydrographic Office? Perhaps they can tell us how and where they publish their data?

I think they consider Shoa :: Pronóstico de Mareas to be good enough of a public source. At least the data is there for 2 months...

Re: Electronic tide chart data for Chile

Could it be that if you are "qualified" enough to safely arrive there, you can "get in the flow of it" so to speak, once you arrive?

I find that once I'm out on the boat I can "get in the rhythm" of tides and currents within less than a day. You'd be "in the spirit" for quite some time before you get there.

Good luck, safe journey.

PS - You might read up on Sequitur who sailed their Hunter 49 down and around a few years ago. They had a blog with lots of good information.

Re: Electronic tide chart data for Chile

My old hunting grounds. I worked on and ran charter yachts in the Beagle and Cape Horn area and have cruised the rest of it. I put together a presentation a while back.

Chile – Presentation – Tweed's World

As far as tides go. There are only half a dozen reference station in the channels. The sailing directions will give you offsets for the more difficult passages. Around the Chiloe area the tides are very big up to around 12m but almost everywhere south of there are closer to 1.5m. Last time I was there I had Timezero and that had tides and currents.

Get the latest C-Map charts. Don't mess around with the old knock off CM93 charts.

Get Giorgio and Mariolina's book if you don't already have it. Home Page

Sorry, wrong link. Don't know if the old and very good H49 website is still out there somewhere. This incorrect content link is from my bookmarked file.

Thanks, I enjoyed your presentation. As OpenCPN users we depend heavily on Google Earth satellite imagery using GE2KAP. I noticed you used some Landsat images as well and was wondering how you got these onto OpenCPN?

It is a fairly complex process. Very basically download the landsat images (huge files) and process the RGB (sometimes IR) channels using filters to show what is needed. I used ARCGIS (free for personal use) and found instructions and scripts online; my partner is an ecologist and uses satellite imagery in her work and gave me lots of pointers. Once processed it is a simple matter to export the georeferenced images.

North of the Gulfo de Penas the salmoneras are a pain in the arse. Virtually non-existant south of the Gulf.

We later made some filters to pick up coral and processed images of the Gambiers and Tuamotus to show up bommies and reefs. It worked quite well.

Thanks, I'll have a crack at it when we are back in the land of fast internet.

Try WX32Tide. It is a program you put on your computer. A quick look at my copy shows tides for Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. Google the name and you should find it.

He wanted to have the data displayed on OpenCPN and that's what I posted previous to yours. (It's from the source the WxTide uses)

Re: Electronic tide chart data for Chile

I played around with the data from WxTides in Chile. Some stations work but many are off significantly. Check them against the SHOA tide tables and only use ones that you can reliably establish an offset for.

The cruising guides give tidal information relative to only a few primary stations.

Sorry shoukd have mentioned this source in my previous reply.
