Dedicated Notebook for OpenCPN

I have a notebook with a fresh install of Ubuntu Natty, and I would like to install OpenCPN. The non-beta compiles, but though it did start up, after I added over a GB of charts it crashes (too lazy to just install the local charts).

Though I program for a living, I am not eager to start a research project. What is the recommended (expedient) way to get up and running? Should I try to compile a beta from the git repo, install another version of Ubuntu, patch something more here (I had to edite something for Cmake a while back), or install Navigatrix instead?

If I must I will use my (other) Windows 7 notebook, but I'd rather have a dedicated older machine on the boat.

Re: Dedicated Notebook for OpenCPN

I should have thought to try the binary. Somehow I think I tried months and and it was a problem. I tried (again) and it seems the deb package installs and runs fine, though the notebook locked up when I left OpenCPN running overnight.

So
sudo dpkg -i opencpn_2.3.1-1_amd64.deb

Does a good working install on Natty (so far). I turned sleep mode off and will try again.

Re: Dedicated Notebook for OpenCPN

If you have a dedicated laptop, why not try Navigatrix?
