Dashboard sunrise/sunset error

Hi,

I announced, some times ago that there is an error in the Dashboard sunrise/sunset computation.

This occurs in June close to the Artic circle. Those days, sunset is occurring at something like 0:50 and sunrise some minutes later.

The Dashboard is simply indicate two time "---"...
Some days ago, it was indicating a sunrise time and "---" as sunset time.

As the dashboard is using the GPS as data source (position and time), I pasted here below some NMEA dataflow of today (10/06/2016).

If you need help for testing, please mail to plang@irisoft.be

Best regards

Pierre

Hi Pierre,

The best way to keep a record of this outage is to put a request in Tracker/Flyspray

I have another program that says the same (no sunrise or sunset at this time of the year).

I suppose you expected a sunrise and sunset because you are south of the arctic circle. So I did.

A little research showed I was wrong.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Arctic Circle is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere at which the sun can remain continuously above or below the horizon for twenty-four hours; as a result, at least once each year at any location within the Arctic Circle the sun is visible at local midnight, and at least once it is not visible at local noon.[6]

Directly on the Arctic Circle these events occur, in principle, exactly once per year: at the June and December solstices, respectively. However, because of atmospheric refraction and mirages, and because the sun appears as a disk and not a point, part of the midnight sun may be seen on the night of the northern summer solstice up to about 50 minutes (′) (90 km (56 mi)) south of the Arctic Circle; similarly, on the day of the northern winter solstice, part of the sun may be seen up to about 50′ north of the Arctic Circle. That is true at sea level; those limits increase with elevation above sea level, although in mountainous regions there is often no direct view of the true horizon.
Interesting to note, at that location you will have a midnight sun at summer solstice but you will also have some sun at winter solstice.

Re: Dashboard sunrise/sunset error

The paper nautical almanac will also show no sunrise or sunset. Its down to the fact that the sunrise time is based on the rational horizon, your eye sees the observed horizon. Also the sunrise time is based on the centre of the sun.. not the upper limb.

In a similar fashion for much of the year in high latitudes the almanac will not list twilight times as the sun never gets 5 or 10 degrees below the horizon depending on which twilight you are interested in.

Re: Dashboard sunrise/sunset error

You should vote for your Tracker Item and discuss it further there:
FS#2096 : Sunrise/sunset computation error

Also vote for other Dashboard Items here:
OpenCPN::OpenCPN07 - pi - Dashboard: Tasklist

PS: Later, is FS#2096 unfixable because there is nothing to fix? Should we close this item in Tracker?

This I would understand from the comments above: there are no meaningful data for Sunset/Sunrise for this Latitude and date. Not a bug, but a feature (of Mother Earth).
