Crash opening S63 charts

I am running OpenCPN 4.6.1 on Debian Stretch on a laptop. I installed the S63 charts plugin and bought some charts from Chartworld. I imported the Cell Permits and Charts successfully and was able to view the new S63 charts with everything operating as it should. However if I close OpenCPN and then re-open it, it crashes when I try to view the S63 charts a second time. Processor usage by OpenCPN goes to 100% and the memory usage gradually increases until all memory is used up and the computer freezes.

The last line in opencpn.log when the crash occurs is:
15:30:06 GMT: /usr/bin/OCPNsenc -n -i "/home/navigator/.opencpn/s63/s63SENC/UY300003.es57" -o "/tmp/0EqQVS" -u 6DE2AEC86B20602A25126FFF3147 -e 253E0215 -b 49501 -p UY3000032017113074A8A89D99244D9474A8A89D99244D9420 81CB64C4309A82,0,,49, -z "/usr/lib/opencpn/libs63_pi.so"

The equivalent line when the charts are first installed and I click "Yes" to the "Create eSENCs on Import" message is:
15:45:21 GMT: /usr/bin/OCPNsenc -n -i "/home/navigator/.opencpn/s63/s63SENC/UY300003.es57" -o "/tmp/PQWqqt" -u 6DE2AEC86B20602A25126FFF3147 -e 253E0215 -p UY3000032017113074A8A89D99244D9474A8A89D99244D9420 81CB64C4309A82,0,,49, -z "/usr/lib/opencpn/libs63_pi.so"

The difference seems to be that on the initial import, the "-b 49501" option is not there. I don't know enough about OCPNsenc to know what that is doing but possibly the -b option is somehow causing the crash.

Any suggestions? The ability to use S63 charts will be a great feature if I can get it to work.

Re: Crash opening S63 charts

Is that just that chart or are other charts conflicting as well?

What happens if you keep this chart out of the chart set?

Re: Crash opening S63 charts

Hi Hubert,

it's not just that chart.

I made two separate chart orders. Chart UY300003 was in the second order so I tried just installing the permit and charts from the first order.

This time the crash happened earlier, when I clicked "Yes" to the "Create eSENCs on Import" message. The last line in the logfile is the same, but with a different chart number:

18:29:13 GMT: /usr/bin/OCPNsenc -n -i "/home/navigator/.opencpn/s63/s63SENC/UY500019.es57" -o "/tmp/xaMMz8" -u 6DE2AEC86B20602A25126FFF3147 -e 253E0215 -b 49501 -p UY5000192017113005D5EB556264D2B205D5EB556264D2B2C2 D8BCB5928B57FA,0,,49, -z "/usr/lib/opencpn/libs63_pi.so"

Re: Crash opening S63 charts

In this case can please send us

- the log-file (a complete part from start-up of OpenCPN until the crash)
- one of the chart sets, including the PERMIT.txt of this set

info at o-charts.org

A bit strange as there are more people with Debian/Ubuntu and S-63.
Charts from Uruguay are not that common...

Re: Crash opening S63 charts

Dave,

behaviour with OpenGL disabled is very odd. Initially, the charts install fine and everything seems to work, like with the OpenGL on. But this time, after the program is closed and restarted, the S63 charts do display. They can be panned and zoomed using the mouse. But, the toolbar buttons do not work. If the OpenCPN window is resized, the chart does not expand to fill the window as it should (see attached screenshot.) And memory usage by OpenCPN climbs steadily, as before, until all is used up and the computer grinds to a halt.

Re: Crash opening S63 charts

Update:

I have tried 3 things to get my S63 charts to work:
Update to OpenCPN 4.8.0 for Linux - no change, still crashes.
Use OpenCPN for Windows on the original hardware - works
Use OpenCPN for Linux on a different laptop running Debian 8 Jessie - works

So the problem is the particular hardware/software configuration of the orginal Linux installation, not the Uruguayan charts.

As I am not running any "Linux only" software under way, using OpenCPN for Windows will work for me.

^----- Rename or delete the file opencpn.conf so a new one will be build on this Linux machine.

Re: Crash opening S63 charts

You may have done this in linux, but in windows, whenever there is an upgrade, and charts are not working right, I find I need to:
1. Clean up my opencpn.ini file and make it nice and simple, because of testing PI.
2. Rebuild the entire chart database. (but before doing that, I use chartdwnloader and update all the charts).
Just suggesting this obvious procedure as it might have been missed, but it more likely something bdbcat & bcn would know about because it it is with S-63 encrpyted charts. Perhaps your downloads or the key was not good?
