Allowing spaces in a name is largely a Windows anomaly. I am a little gray on how names are stored now, but as recently as XP, the names were actually stored on disk with a "short name", and the name with spaces was maintained in a field that was basically a special comment field.

In asking around the office just now, I am told that on Win 7, names are saved with the spaces. However when I asked how exactly they are stored so it knows where the end of the name is, they couldn't tell me. So, could be they are still actually stored with a substitute name, or maybe there is a binary field telling the system how many characters, or a special hex code to tell it when it has reached the end of the name. The reason I am still a skeptic is that Microsoft has a history of saying they have done things, only to find out that under the covers, it's really still the same old thing, just camouflaged a little better.

Main point is, since I work cross platform, I just NEVER name anything with a space. AND, I create my own place on disk to store my stuff so it doesn't fall under "Documents and Settings" and other such nasty names. I also am familiar with using the short name like DOCUME~1 instead, so there are no spaces. So if there IS something I have to access, I can use the short name and still not have to worry about embedded spaces.

My suggestion is, if you are planning to delve into the Open Source world, you would be best served to start avoiding spaces in names. You probably ranthewordstogether for effect, but just in case, I would run_the_words_together like this instead.

Having said all that, it would be best for people writing things they would like to be used in Windoze, to make sure they can handle spaces in names.

And having said THAT, I'm afraid I can't get fired up enough to go back and modify mc2bsbh to handle spaces.

So, in the end, I think I am really saying you are right, but tough.

Re: Convert TIFF Image into Map KAP

aah,Erik,ok....but I'm dragging the window up and there IS a button just starting to show. It's unlikely I'm going to be able to use the lower buttons without some aggravation. It's the way it is setting itself on my 1024x768 screen.Maximize absolutely doesn't help. It's worse.I can't drag the window.
I've seen this before, where certain apps can't suit my screen and I have to manipulate em up and down to use em.
Maybe you could incorporate an ini file or something. The window really doesn't need be this long.

no,there really is no way.I can only drag with the top.Dragging corners or sides- no go.Maximize is worse. The bottom is lost to me.

Oh,if I resize my screen upward,it's there but on this T42 that's kind of SUPER aggravating. At least I've seen it now
I'll just give it a try on a different computer and see.

aah.on the emachine (1280x800)it works better-not great but better...Maximise shows the button on this one.
The default window is still problematic. As soon as I drag edges to make it fit better,it can go awry again.

In the meantime i am pretty bored by copying, reformatting and pasting data from Google maps to Seaclear Calibration. So this small utility was born. Just rename the .doc to an .exe and start it. If the tool makes sense, i will work a little bit more on error-capturing, it's just a first attempt.... (Tested on XP, Firefox). Good Luck!

Re: Convert TIFF Image into Map KAP

HappySeagull,
Thanks for your comment!
Currently i am working on creating KAP-files directly from Google Maps, it looks good for the moment, need some more work to do.
With one click you than can create a kap-file from GM (4000 x 4000 pixels if you want, any zoom-level and maps or satelite-view) without any manual input...
One day i will upload it here.....

Re: Convert TIFF Image into Map KAP

Erik,

So did you ever write that program to convert Google maps to registered TIFF files that OpenCPN can read, as you promised in 2011?

I'm not a computer geek, so I can't figure out how to convert Helpcal output to something OpenCPN can use. According to everybody, Mapcal needs several other programs, including mc2bsbh.exe and nconvert.exe, to be in the same directory. I presume that Mapcal calls these programs externally with the right parameters. If so, where can I get nconvert.exe? Googling "nconvert.exe" gets me nowhere -- apparently that's a common name for programs. What other programs do I need, and where do I find them?

It would be a great help if you could bundle all the code I need in one set of files, so I can simply download them to a folder and run them.

Help!

Rob
