We agree that your desired functionality is a matter of route planning. 'Normal' route planning would be done by plotting expected waypoints on a chart. And then following that route accompanied by visual checking.

Why don't you just plot the harbour approach route on a chart also? And follow that route just as you would do in open sea?

The attachment above is a chart of 'Hammerhavnen' on the North West coast of Bornholm. Download the attachment to your charts folder of your OCPN-installation and rename the attachment to file type .KAP (remove the '.doc').

Then in OCPN zoom in to Hammerhavnen and see a harbourplan directly integrated into OCPN.

Then tell me why that solution does not solve (at least part of) your problem?

Because the helmsman does not have a plotter in front of him?

And btw, - some 5-6 years back I went to Kappeln and hired a Bavaria 31 cruiser for a week, and it perfectly well did have a chartplotter right in front of me (as a skipper and helmsman).

I still suspect your problem to be 'route planning, especially harbour approaching, - having harbour plans as mere images/printouts and with plotter out of sight by helmsman ' ?

Your trip sounds exciting indeed, I'm afraid two weeks away would take two weeks sailing away from my own boat :-)

And of course, - it's not up to me to decide whether it's a plugin or not. I'm just trying to understand your problem in relation to my idea of geo-calibrated harbour plans.

This is very good!!!! Will there be more?

Re: Contribution to OpenCPN Development

I'm interested in harbour plans which are not already part of cm93.
Hammerhavnen is already in cm93 however.

Yes, - but it's a long term project, - I've still only finished about 50% and no progress at the moment.

My proces is to 'image-overlay' them in Google Earth, save them as KML/KMZ-files and then to convert them with the MAPC2MAPC-program (I bought it, it's cheap and good). The time-consuming part is to 'overlay' them in GE, - the rest is trivial.

Copyright:
It's legal to store local copies of the danish harbour plan images according to the copyright notices, - but probably not to format and to distribute them as geo-calibrated charts.

However it cannot (IMHO) be illegal to distribute separate geo-data on how to use local image-copies as charts in OCPN. Data e.g represented as BSB-headers separate from the images.

Re: Contribution to OpenCPN Development

Hi, Guys

I've finished developing of the "harbour approach" feature.

I don't do pull request yet, because if the discussion above.

It is available undder github.com as cloned reposotory OpenCPN/registry , branch "harbour_approach"

I will try out the uploaded routing in my next sailing trip and see how and if it is useful.
Uploaded file can be opened by this mentioned branch.

See "Print route" feature and see the printed tables for the harbour approaches.

I would like to know you opinition, suggestions for improvements and general comments.

Cheers,
registry

Registry,

upload does only support a few filetypes and rejects the rest.

Rename your file to "navobj.xml.pdf" or "navobj.xml.doc" and try again.
