Connecting Tab to Laptop via Teamviewer LAN

Until something easier comes along,by far the most trouble free way to connect your Android tab to your laptop is using the FREE TeamViewer to run ALL your Windows based programs via LAN from the cockpit, whilst storing your laptop safely below on the chart table. You also have far more storing capacity on your old laptop than the limited RAM tab.

In this way,you can run all your Windows based progs without sacrificing all your FREE newly acquired Android apps or having to root your device.

See attached screendumps from my tablet.

Re: CONNECTING TAB TO LAPTOP VIA TEAMVIEWER LAN

Connecting your tablet/smartphone to your laptop over LAN with TeamViewer is easily done using the USB Pendrive Router Windy31 selling at around US$ 30.- in the US.
In Brazil,it retails at BRS 55.-

Just installed team view to check it out today, easy install and set up. A little slow for me, but I think that is a local LAN issue.

Seems to work fine w Fugawi running inder XP.

Yes,it runs fine for me too on all my nav progs.

Especially useful creating optimized routes with qtVlm, which you can also download to Android based nav apps in .kml format as well as converting/importing standard .kap maps to OruxMaps and MarineNavigator as a safety plan B.

A local LAN doing nothing else should be more than quick enough...

I have all my maps on a 16GB dongle in a Samsung USB port.

Yes, but signal is really weak where I am staying ashore now, and a shared router. I expect it will be fine back aboard with a dedicated router in close proximity.

Connecting a tab to a laptop is even more easily done without hardware.

1) Set up an AP on one of the devices and connect the other device to this AP.

2) Note Win XP cannot create an AP so with an Android tab you will create AP on the tab then connect your Win XP machine to it. On Win8 you can create an AP and connect your tab to it.

3) None of the methods is energy efficient.

It might be difficult to connect a device to Antenna Propagation or to Associated Press ;-)

Yes. As a poster stated above, I mean Access Point, a wifi one.

Win XP does not create APs and Android tablets cannot connect to adhoc Win networks, hence with Win XP the method is to fire up an AP on the tablet. Then connect your Win XP machine to it.

Win 8 can create an AP and so connecting either way is possible.

Cheers,
b.

Barney..

Come to think about it,you must be right. After all I already use several file managing apps which displays an IP you execute in your Windows PC which establishes two way contact. But these commands are supplied by an app,how do you initiate the same procedure without an app? The PC en is easy, you just enter the given IP.
WiFi File Transfer for example uses this method.

Barney..

The TeamViewer instructions also mentions this possibility but how do you set up my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tab as an AP? I tried but did not succeed.

I assume your Tab is an Android one?

On our Samsung Android phone this is in wifi settings. On our Acer tab, we downloaded a free AP App from Play. It uses Android AP functionality smartly hidden by Acer. No root.

I will look up the tab now and post again the name of the Android App that we use.

This invisibility of AP functionality in Android may be somehow related to the version of Android that your mobile device runs.

Re: CONNECTING TAB TO LAPTOP VIA TEAMVIEWER LAN

I was doing some experiments with my Bluetooth Logitec USB keyboard/mouse combination and found that with a 1m USB extender and the Logitech´s USB transmitters 1 m cable lenght,I could still operate both keyboard and mouse from a distance of around 12 feet, even around a corner in the hallway. You could get a longer USB extender cable in order to place the bluetooth head in a convenient position near the cockpit. So you can now use the full size keyboard and the mouse to operate OpenCPN from your tablet in the cockpit. (Weather permitting)

I am running Android 4.04 on both my Galaxy tab and phone.
I have an app called Free WIFI Spot but I am not able to connect to my laptop.

Re: CONNECTING TAB TO LAPTOP VIA TEAMVIEWER LAN

The Android AP App we use is called Hotspot Control. It is free and no root:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...tcontrol&hl=en

I bet there will be a couple of alternatives around.

Our Android is Jelly Bean 4.1 (I believe it is API 16). Our XP is SP3.

If you cannot connect with TeamViewer for any reason, try other VNC software - they all have their peculiarities and some are better at their jobs than others.

BTW this is by far NOT the best solution if energy efficiency or ease of control are the priority.

Yep. I too fooled around with BT (for NMEA data - e.g. AIS) but I found it very iffy to connect and reconnect. Can't imagine having this much time out at sea to fumble around with such things. I tend to only use things that connect right away and do so every time I want to connect. Not sure but something is telling me my BT issues are all on Win side, not on the Android side.

Re connecting over an AP: when you run an Android AP then the connecting is to the Android - but I am sure this is what you mean.
