Connecting seatalkng

I love opencpn on my laptop and now have a new autopilot raymarine evo 100 which is nmea 2000 only.

What is the best way to connect it so that i can upload waypoints and get gps data. , it would be nice NOT to use a usb to serial device which i have lots of problems with in the past.

I imagine two things that need to happen the nema 0183 conversion to 2000 and the usb to the seatalkng.

I am mostly coastal cruising single handed.

Compliments of the season to all my friends at cruises forum

Re: Connecting seatalkng

I think there is interest in this, in a broad way, however we would need to find someone with the same interest and the ability to program a plugin. Additionally everyone is very busy getting 4.0 ready!

Re: Connecting seatalkng

Did somebody try to connect a Seatalk NG device to Opencpn with an Actisense NWG1-STNG and Serial to USB converter (as in the first question) ?
Reading the doc, I'm not sure we need a plug-in.

Re: Connecting seatalkng

We do not need a plugin. The Actisense gateway should "just work". A USB to serial converter is needed unless your computer has a real serial port. The other option could be a USB NGT-1 and a problem on the N2K side... Don't hesitate to ask Actisense support, they seem to be nice guys.
Just make sure your USB-Serial converter is not using some cheap fake Prolific chip and you should be fine - I have a much better experience wit FTDI based units.

NGW-1: NMEA 0183 to 2000
Actisense Collaborate with Raymarine
The Actisense® NMEA 2000® to NMEA 0183 Gateway is the easiest way to link between a boat’s old and new data networks. The NGW-1 can convert NMEA 0183 data into NMEA 2000® data and vice-versa.
"..Raymarine, said: “This has proven to be a mutually beneficial working relationship...Actisense performed to the brief admirably. We look forward to an on-going relationship with Actisense.”

Re: Connecting seatalkng

Actisence gateway works just fine with both SeaTalk and STNG depending on how the gateway is configured.

Re: Connecting seatalkng

What do you think would happen if you just connect the SeaTalk network to USB? I have this stripped spur cable (Spur Cables) and wonder if OpenCPN might be able to interpret what comes through the cable in some way?

lasse...
In the best case nothing happens. In the worst case something will burn. SeaTalk NG is NMEA 2000, which in turn is CanBus. You really need to convert it to something you may connect to the ports of your computer. Even then, if you don't convert it to NMEA0183, OpenCPN will not do anything with it currently.

Re: Connecting seatalkng

It's been a while since I have done anything specific with SeaTalk but you would need a converter as the data formats/signals are different between it and a standard USB format. I have an old converter down in my box of old electronic parts just in case I need to do that sometime.

Re: Connecting seatalkng

Yes I guessed it wasnt that simple. :-) I have read a lot about different boxes to connect seatalk, nmea and computers but dont know if I get any viser.
What would you say is the most economic and stable way of connecting a SeaTalk ng network to a laptop running OpenCPN on Linux. I want to send routes to the autopilot and receive input from the instruments.

Best regards, Lasse

Re: Connecting seatalkng

OP - I haven't looked in to it but I suspect the Actisense is where I would go. The sea talk converter I have requires a serial port connection, or an adaptor to convert that to 0183 sentences.

The raymarine solution:
Raymarine NMEA 0183 Multiplexer
http://www.jamestowndistributors.com...1166_5_WEB.pdf

May not be cheap, but it is what Raymarine uses.

The Mareton USB100 is a NMEA 2000 ( seatalkng) to 0183 with USB connections

My understanding is that the OP has seatalkng, if so that device is not suitable
