Charts: OpenSeaMap for OpenCPN

KAP-charts from OpenSeaMap - OpenStreetMap Wiki

Are these worthwhile having in the User Documentation?

Just to test I downloaded the " North sea" charts - they installed fine and works ( Opencpn 4.4) Fine for displaying boat positions on a AIS display but lacking required information for navigation.

Correct, the wording "OpenSeaMap" is wrong and misleading, "OpenStreetMap" is right however, although you might be find yourself in a swamp after using it for car + street navigation.

Re: Charts: OpenSeaMap for OpenCPN

The KAP charts can be used in combination with paper Charts. On the KAP OpenCPN screen you can see the position of the Boat. But depth contours are hardly available.

Ais info does not work.

Tidal gauges work.

And you get detailed street maps.

AIS works just perfect with openSeamap-, see enclosed screen shoot.

Yes, it works on my Linux system, but I did not see the AIS info on my Raspi OpenGL system.

Kap Charts can be usefull as an addition to paper charts.

AIS and ais info Works fine on raspberry openplotter 0.8 with opengl, but opencpn crach if using small area openseachart ( zooming chart scale in), see attached.

Re: Charts: OpenSeaMap for OpenCPN

Thanks for advising. Someday by adding depth information these might be useful. Potential of User sourced depth? Or perhaps some service? I wonder about the quality and source of bouy info. Not ready for reference in manual yet. Thanks.

Re: Charts: OpenSeaMap for OpenCPN

I also took a look at these charts in OpenCPN a few months back. A great idea and hopefully there will be a way to add navigation details in the future.

The main reason I didn't pursue these charts any further was that they are mostly harbor and coastal charts, where the navigation info (depths, shoreline detail and bouyage) become important. I hadn't thought of them as an AIS adjunt to paper charts, and that does make them useful for areas in which detailed electronic charts are not readily available or are prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately those areas often don't have a lot of roads, so I'm not sure the OpenSea coverage would be that useful.

Re: Charts: OpenSeaMap for OpenCPN

Well,

this is one of the latest versions of the official Belgium charts.

Obviously there is additional information here when compared with the OSM charts.
But the shorelines of OSM are pretty accurate and up-to-date. In most parts of the world.
In our case here the "sparrow" on the western dam is missing.
With repect to lights, those are imported into OSM from official sources if available.
So not that bad neither.
No soundings, but this is well known. No bashing required.

This how the high resolution Inland ENC charts format looks like.

The Delta area of the Netherlands and the Scheldt from the sea to Antwerp are available in high resolution and for free.

Netherlands: Vaarweginformatie site (including Westerschelde).

The complete ENC charts of the Schelde at the VTS-Scheldt site.

Re: Charts: OpenSeaMap for OpenCPN

That is far better than the charts of the do-it-yourself community.
Trusting DIY charts might be dangerous.
