Charts not showing at all zoom levels

Hi all, I have just installed OpenCPN and I am having some problems understanding why charts don't show at all zoom levels while quilting is enabled.

I have attached 3 screen shots, each centered on Rakino Is, Auckland, New Zealand. The charts are all raster image, straight out of the PlugIn download.

Screenshot 1, shows the full maps, everything working.

Screenshot 2, is zooming in on Rakino Is by 1 click and as you can see all maps disappear.

Screenshot 3, is zooming in on Rakino Is by 1 more click, as you can see the map in the top right has disappeared, everything else reappears.

If I turn off quilting, I can select the individual maps just fine and zoom to any level on them.

No amount of clicking/hiding the maps using the map bar at the bottom of the screen show the maps. Only a zoom allows them to be seen.

This problem of disappearing maps happens all over the country at different zoom levels.

I hope someone can shed some light on what I am doing wrong.

Rowan

Re: Charts not showing at all zoom levels

Rowan,

Your screenshots indicate that OpenGL is turned off. Without OpenGL, OpenCPN will not quilt Mercator and Transverse Mercator charts together.

Try enabling OpenGL with Options (wrench tool icon) > Display > Advanced. Click on the box between "Graphics" and "Use Accelerated Graphics (OpenGL)" to put a checkmark in the box.

When OpenGL is enabled, OpenCPN will quilt Mercator and Transverse Mercator charts (and some other projections).

If "Texture Compression with Caching" is enabled under "OpenGL Options" there will be a delay before each chart is displayed for the first time. Subsequent display of the charts in the cache will be faster.

Re: Charts not showing at all zoom levels

I think this should be an item in User Docs FAQ if it is not already.

Re: Charts not showing at all zoom levels

It is mentioned in the manual under the point of quilting with respect to skewed raster charts, not so explicitly about transverse mercator and others.

Re: Charts not showing at all zoom levels

Without OpenGL I would expect O to quilt in the old way, quilting Mercator and Transverse Mercator separately. The OP pic #2 should really show a quilt of 2 Tmercs, as the chart bar indicates. That only the background chart is shown is probably a bug.

Re: Charts not showing at all zoom levels

I still have that problem after changing to OpenGL.

In the OpenGL there is an Options dialogue box.
What settings would work best?

Thanks,

Mark
