Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

....and there's still room for discussion?
81563 I redid as a case in point...see?is it necessary to include blank space when the only extra info is the scale on the chart?Or where a quilt line can be placed "close enough" to read the extra info deemed useful at a readable zoom but still chop out garbage and blank?

Hi
I am new and wanted to ask a question. What are you doing for charts like 21125. It is two rectangles of about equal size. Are you making two out of it. Say 21125A and 21125B or do you have a way to calabrate it as one.

Bob,
cases like this are technically the same thing as small insets in a big charts - they have to calibrated separately and more KAP files have to be created - I'm currently coding the tools to do that.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Ok
But will the end result be two files or one. I am thinking I could start on these and submit them when you are ready. Do not want to waste time. If your code will do this I do not need to. I can break them down into parts then calabrate if needed.

Bob...
we are trying not to do any part of the calibration locally - that would be a total nightmare to coordinate and manage. Just wait for a while when the website extension is ready.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I just went through the 20000 series again to look for charts that would benefit from some PLYing.
I have updated the plys for 2450, 25526, 26070, 26145, 26306, 26307, 26344, and 28042. They will have 12/03 dates.

I'm having problems with 26280 and 26284. When I try to update the PLY polygon, it seems to hang with the message "crunching chart 26084" or something like that.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Here is some good reading, very relevant to our project.
The latest about chart accuracy, datums etc. It's from a BA point of view, but still applies to a large extent.
Excerpts from "The Mariners Handbook" published 2009.

I don't think so.
  1. There are links from opencpn.info to these files, such as NGA Charts Status Region 2 at OpenCPN.info (English)
  2. Many other maps are available
  3. Why would the results of a community effort not be available to the community?

Zeev & Happy...
No reason at all, the files uploaded to the server by other means than ftp belonged to a different user and didn't have the right permissions set to be readable through anonymous ftp. Should be corrected now.

...yikes! A Highlight for me is:
" the largest difference found to date (2009) is 7 miles in the Pacific ocean but larger differences may exist"
(section 2.12 about undetermined datums)....

I fired up Nohals GE plugin to see if I can spot this!....Many of the NGAs don't agree perfectly but ,GE can't get the Greenwich meridian right (it's .249 min west) so maybe that's as far as I'd allow GE to correct my charts,too...unless I had a real report.

Happy,
I'm confused by "GE can't get the Greenwich meridian right (it's .249 min west)" Couldyou say a little more?
