Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

nohal: progress bar works on my remote box (Gentoo/firefox), images are uploading via FTP now. Can I add a md5 per file?

surveyor: once the upload for region 6 is done, I can try to load your missing files via the ruby script. The ruby script doesn't use the ImageProperties.xml.

Do me a favor and get chart 61601 Rodrigues for via the py script for.

Is there a site for upload as well?

You are mentioning that you are not satisfied with the size of some files.
What are you considering an "ideal" size?

Hubert
There are no ready answers to these questions now.
Our first priority is to catch the "raw" jpeg picture files and save them for the future. I looks like we are on our way to solve this rather quickly.

Next thing is .....we need some picture experts to advice us about the best procedure forward with the raw jpg:s.
We still haven't heard from NGA, via "brak", if it's possible to get the "original" picture files, prior to being zoomified.

Have a look at the Guiana charts around Cayenne. Is this the way to treat inserts?
Nice work, better than mine... But yes, I do inserts the same way I think, just that MapCal seems to add a pixel or more to the defined border (or I am fatfingering it).

Have a look at these and critique please:

If you feel like, you can of course. I can do it later on the server before the files go to "distribution".

Allenpeda: Downloading and stitching is still the way to go. We will have to upload them later to a specific server, once that is ironed out.

Surveyor: Your missing charts are going here for now:

Netsurfer will come up shortly with new download instructions.
Pictures already uploaded will be transfered to the new site, no need to upload again.

Meanwhile this is what is acceptable minimum quality for a chart, in my book.
Useful up to about zoom factor x2, then pixilating.
This was downloaded with dezoomify.py on std setting 75% quality and then treated with

convert 24375.jpg -resize 40% -depth 4 -colors 16 24375out2.jpg
No color treatment at all.

Is this an acceptable minimum quality?

this looks quite good, especially with no manual intervention. It looks especially good in high contrast areas, like white water and black numbers. It gets more fuzzy on grey land, black letters, greyish reef. There I would prefer a bit better quality. I am doing the resize to 50% and output to png.

Or just post the source file plus hdr and I can play with it myself.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

In the region 5, as already reported, 52047 stalls the py script as well.
There are quite a few that the python script chokes on and I could not grab.
.....
On these files the script would just stop. I tried each of them on different machines with the same results.

Anyway, here is the list of the ones that I could not get. If someone would grab these I would greatly appreciate it. There are quite a few
I add this to my list then. the ruby script seems to do OK with the ones the py fails on.

The 52125 is standard download (75%), pixel count 50% reduced and with a palette of 256 colors (GIMP), no additional treatment.
Original scale is 75.000, at x2 (38.000) for me at the limit, at x4 not acceptable any longer.

Some info & scripts that could help make especially the scanned charts smaller and better looking:
ImageMagick • View topic - Noise Reduction
Fred's ImageMagick Scripts: DENOISE
Fred's ImageMagick Scripts: ISONOISE
Fred's ImageMagick Scripts: TEXTCLEANER

I don't have the original! Also I cropped the original chart containing two inserts after converting. You can always download the original, crop the A insert and use my header. Get the header from the kap file, just copy the text in the beginning. You would have to adjust the pixelcount though.
REF1 starts in lower left corner and then proceed clockwise.

I can't see any point in converting to png the way you suggest. Most likely you will end up with a larger file, with no gain.

I see this problem:

convert: unable to open image `7-55-32.jpg'

There are images 7-55-31.jpg and 7-55-33.jpg but the intermediate is not there.
