Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Pavel,

an idea: what about a try-out chart to play with? Results to be trashed at will?

-- I expected a result like that for a crossing path as Happy tried, but doing that with a "real" chart as I was a little bit reluctant --

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I'm a bit lost... Am I allowed to download the 2400+ kap charts at http://opencpn.xtr.cz/nga-kaps...?
I have done so anyway, and couldn't find faults with 81737 or 81329 (O 2.5.0 Vista)

But you might edit the path file as well --> back to the 4 corners and there you go
Or recalibrate the chart. That should bring up a clear path/GPX file too.
..tried that..or did I?Can try again but it seems everything I put in just gets overlaid and does not replace. Also, one had a pretty odd calibration to Guam'63 Datum, which I did delete(apologies to whoever) but it brought to mind that it may be a problem PER the datums..."Unknown" chart datum may not mesh well with gpx's offered, them being assmed to be wgs84 by O...or something like that.

Just split it, mixing a good glass of rum in it!
The other half is for me - and I'm going to bed!

I have the 81329 a little closer than that!It doesn't agree with CM93 I have ,you can see but...anyways,I'm trying to reset the gpx by changing the chart back to .".Plys Needed".Hope springs infernal...trouble is,even if I DO get squared around, the chart may be wonky anyways. When it comes to folks correcting chart positions,I bet the quilt border will need redoing too...aargh.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

...anways,moving on..there's plenty of charts that can be done that weren't marked for extra plys. Charts with insets that are on the water should be included.
I've done 22205,22305,24350,24390,24402,24461.24462.24463.24 469...
some in the 6000,8000,9000 series.
I have relevant gpx' for 21021,24469,25482,25484,25524,25527,25550,25561 on my plate now.

Because "Doable with rectangular inset"status isn't changed, there won't be any way to know what others have done without looking at the gpx first.OR checking the date.this'll save downloading the chart unless you want to update anyways.

Checking gpx is easy in a notepad-like reader or opencpn.A simple border has 5 points.

81737 and 81329 I changed to "problem charts" until someone can fix em..
I've thought of possible reasons. One might be direction,so I place new points clockwise from lower left.I also check all the new gpx in O's properties dialogue As you click each, you travel the route, ending up where you started.Having 2 monitors in extended desktop mode simplifies and unclutters this.

I don't know about the expert part........

There is nothing magical about the text header part of a kap file.
Comments are shown on a line starting with a "!", and should be ignored by all chart programs.
OpenCPN, the only implementation we can check, has a very simple approach. The code is just looking for the bits and pieces it is interested in, say DTM, PLY etc, and ignores the rest.
Noaa charts for example has a header CRR - copyright records - that no one seems to care about, or display(?) How many of you have read it?

There is nothing stopping us writing whatever we want in the header, for example by starting every line with "!#".
The advantage with this idea is of course that the notes are a part of the charts.
So how will the information be accessed?
Shall we tell the user to open all charts in a text editor before using them?
With OpenCPN, we can try to convince Dave to parse all such lines and display them somehow, or write hem to the log file, or somewhere else.
SeaClear may also be a possibility, where I can see "Olle" being interested in expanding the number of available charts that can be used with the program.
We can expect commercial chart plotters to just ignore these lines, which will force users to open the kap files in a text editor to get the information.
An alternative is for such users would be to download a file containing all info about all charts.

Just some ideas, there may be better alternatives for chart notes.....

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Thomas,

my concern were side effects and from your comments I understand that this is not the case.

So it looks that the way to add comments into the header is therefore viable, the texts/comments should show up in OpenCPN and if other programs want to follow, that would create something like an "industry standard" or "de facto standard".

Question is who fills these comments in and should there be a limit size wise - wouldn't be practical to end up with an essay.

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

Hubert
What about this idea?
To display the chart notes right in front of the navigator, we create a mark for each chart, named just "chart-number".gpx, or similar. The "description" would contain the release notes. Check my post about the noaa wx buoys in the weather thread, for some ideas how this could be done. Marine Weather Forecasting
The "Additional information" dialog would contain a link to the chart corrections.
OpenCPN would be patched to load a gpx file with the same name as kap file if they where in the same directory......
The "Mark/WP Properties" dialog would be patched so that the "Description" window increased one line in size.
